Surely you can think of something better than a 'I won the lottery hairdressers car' i.e something that handles?

FTR I've had my Mk1 for 8 years now. They're not that bad.
The only issues I have are the rattles and squeaks - I've never known a car like it. Even the Pug has less and the Honda - not a sausage bar the odd chink from the child's car seat buckle.
Depends on what you are comparing it too, but lets just say I don't have enough fingers, thumbs and toes to count the number of other road cars which would be quicker around a track than a R8 (V10) in standard coupé form let alone a Spider complete with scuttle shake.

Even the V8 R8 is very fast around a track. There isn't a lot that can out run it and fit into the same price bracket. Maybe a GTR I guess but people really underestimate just how quick a car the R8 is.
GTR is an obvious one.
They'll be a few Ferrari's, Lambos, Mercs, Porsche's too. Specialist stuff like Mclaren MP4, Ascari, Zonda, Bugatti, koeniggsegg, Ultimate etc
And then there's hardcore - Ariel, Caterham, Westfield, etc
Even the Corvette ZR1 should leave a V10 coupe high and dry.
R8's are for poser's, hairdressers and Sainsbury runs.

It appears that we are discussing opinions rather than facts at this point, most of the cars you listed either hold a huge premium over the R8 or are purpose built track cars that are unbelievable around a track but are impractical to the point of ridiculousness.
Consider this: How can a car that can go toe to toe with a 911 GT3 and Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera around the bedford autodrome then follow it up by winning Autocars best handling car of the year have poor handling?
If you don't like it thats fine but that doesn't make it a bad car.

By being outpaced by all of the cars mentioned above. Something generic like the Top Gear/Nurburgring lap times would be a good starting point.
The point of comment wasn't ever about the price or practicality of cars but purely on handling. The best place for that is on the track.

Well then why not just buy a formula 1 car? If money and practicality isn't an object nothing is going to be quicker around a track than one of those.

Because that of course would not be fair - road cars only.
There plenty of super cars (of which the R8 is allegedly) that are not three times the price of a basic V8 at £100k plus. 458's at £170k and MP4's can be had for about £160k.
It can also be outpaced by something that is considerably less than the price i.e. the Nissan. You had mentioned this earlier and I thought the penny had dropped.
As you appreciate from my original post the plethora of examples given were 'something better' on the handling front than the R8. All of which do.

If you want to play super cars then you have to play with the boys too.

Back in 1885 Karl Benz had the best handling 'Motorwagon'
As you obviously believe solely the gods that are Autocar, Porsche has won their best car handling car title in the last two consecutive years. Last year it was the Cayman S and in 2011 it was the GT3 RS. In 2009 it was the Lotus Evora. For the record the Caymen S won it back in 2006 and tbh I wouldn't put it past Porsche to make it a hatrick with the new 911.
They of course do like hairdressers cars too as you've highlighted back in 2007. Equally Ellnet was their best handling car in 2003 - The Mazda MX5. Admittedly a half decent handling car for its class.
Believe who or what you want but I'll stick with Stuttgart, around a track a 997 turbo has been my personal favourite. The R8 was a disappointment and I'll leave that one for the posers and the worshippers of the 5 rings.
