Would be good if Admin could make this a sticky...

I got mine from here, they are based in Spain, but I had mine within 3 days, and they are the cheapest around I found.

They sell the USB version, or the Serial version.

Beware those USB cables. They use drivers that emulate a serial port. That makes then no better than a USB<->Serial converter. The USB cables we sell are accessed directly, no "virtual" serial port to mess up the protocol timing. I'm not saying those cables won't work on your particular car, but I am saying I bet I can find control modules on which ours work fine but these won't.

Also, maybe one question the ethics of a company (Ucables.com) who uses pictures blatantly stolen from our site to sell their clone wares.

I have to agree with Uwe.
I started out with an aftermarket cable and demo software.
I found it so useful, I decided to buy a USB cable and software license from it's developer (Ross tech)
With the current dollar rate, it's pretty good value, and you're supporting the guys who wrote this usefull tool, rathe than just lining the pockets of someone who can use a soldering iron.

I bought one and its fine, so has my friend he's bought the serial one, I got the USB one, they both work fine.

They have used the pics I agree, but then they are also linking to your site also, and recommending VAGCOM as the software to be used, so they are not trying to out-do the business of Ross-Tech...

the fact that both charge extraordinary prices for a pc cable is beyond me. manufacturing cost would be no more than about 10ukp if that for these cables. the problem is they have a stronghold on this after market cables and charge what they like for them.

uwe if this site has infringed on copyright material by stealing something or yours, then surely you should take them to court?

Unless you make them in China, and in batches of thousands at a time, they will cost more than 10 pounds to make. Trust me on this, we've made a few..:)

To take them to court, I'd have to hire a lawyer in whatever country they're in. Not worth it for a couple of pilfered pictures.

you can change the baud rate in the VAG-COM settings I think.

http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/option_screen.html

Start Baud is the first baud rate that VAG-COM will try when connecting to a controller. The current default value is 0. This means VAG-COM will determine the correct start baud on its own. With the HEX-COM Interface, this field is unavailable

Also

USB<->RS-232 converters are often unable to handle the baud rate and timing requirements that are demanded by many control modules using the VAG protocol. We have had very poor results with most available USB<->RS-232 converters, therefore USB<->RS232 converters are "Not Supported." Please do not ask us for technical assistance if you are using one of these converters.

It shouldn't allow you to reg until it's happy with your interface - thats a thoughtful feature of VAG-COM so you don't waste your money.

Are you using a USB > Serial adaptor? they are known to be an issue?

Have a look at the FAQ's etc on the Ross Tech site.

yes it could well be the lead i have a 9 pin to usb lead as the laptop doesnt have a 9 pin serial port on the back.

all there is on the back is 3 usb ports, 1 x 25 pin port, 1 x 15 pin port.

on my plug to go into the car it is a 9 pin port.

Don't buy one of these, my friend did and found problems especially when trying to alter the convenience functions.
Uwe's cable is worth the extra money.

Hi Uwe, do you offer a discount on your genuine cables for SCN members? If so how do I get one?

If we offered discounts to members of one forum, members of other forums would demand the same, and then we'd be discounting to practically everyone we sell to. Therefore the answer has to be "no".

We believe we offer a fair price for our products. The only thing really comparable is is VW's factory VAS set up at roughly 20x the price, but they won't give you 10% of the support we give to our customers.(*)

(*) Customers are people who actually buy product from us or our authorized resellers. People using third-party interfaces with the free shareware don't qualify..:)
