I have the same experience on my car when it is cold, I find going slower with the 1st to 2nd changes and making sure my foot is right on the floor with the clutch helps.

Agreed that tactic does work. But I would still like to try and fix the problem rather than treat the symptom.

Has anyone here tried a transmission fluid change to try and resolve this?

Yes, I had the dealer change the Gbox oil. (wne tback to them after I posted my last comment some time ago and they went back to discuss with SeatUK)

IIRC, there was a tech note the dealer found that mentioned swapping to a thinner oil if the customer commented on poor 1/2 changes.

Much better in the cold now.

Should add, I did this too - swapped to a recommended oil from Opie.

Cold start 1/2 much better and really only takes a few mins to warm up now, at which point its completely fine. 2/3 change completely sorted too. Not perfect, but much better. In the end, well worth doing for the £35 odd in labour and £30 odd in oil!

Since I last posted I've notice mine get worse as it gets colder. Even third feels less slick on the first use of the day.

Will investigate with Seat as surely this will get worse as the car gets older; it's only done 13k at the moment.

It seems to be common in all Vag cars my Exeo does it my Dads Octavia VRs and my mates TT

I must say though that Exeo does get better once it's warm but it's still not smooth all through the gears it's very mechanical and notchy but feels strong.

Hmmm....I've not noticed this in my 170 Sport Tech ST at all?

I'm going to have to try and tell the difference now aren't I.

I'm leaving mine as is, it is a bit more mechanical/resiting during cold weather, but fine once a couple of miles down the road. Adds character I think.

I'll be replacing gearbox oil at 50k/5years anyway.

Mine (ST Sport Tech 170 TDI) is exactly the same - this last couple of weeks 1st to 2nd first thing in morning feels like the gear lever gets "stuck" half way. 1 mile down the road it's better, and within 2 miles its fine, as the gearbox warms up.

It's been like it from brand new - never got worse or better, but only when it's very cold.

I love the car, but I doubt mine will see 50k miles, as the unreliable/random parking sensor issues are driving me nuts!

This is a known issue with the 6-speed gearbox.
The recommended gearbox oil is 75W90 (ie. Castrol Syntrans Transaxle (TAF-X) 75W-90).
Some people recommend 75W80 (ie. Castrol Syntrans V FE 75W-80) to solve this issue with 1st and 2nd gear during cold weather.

Opie oils recommended me: FUCHS TITAN SINTOFLUID SAE 75W-80 SYNTHETIC MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID for mine (although I'm a TSI, not sure if different to TDIs). Also had a discount code going when I ordered it.

Hi Sorry to bring this old thread up, I test drove a exeo yesterday this was the same, 1st to 2nd. Also one thing I'd like to point out, my current car vw golf 1.9 tdi 57reg that I'm going to chop in for the Exeo Thursday that had to have a complete gearbox rebuild including all the gear sets etc and when I got the car back that also like it did before was notchy 1st to 2nd.

There is a product lucas transmission fix we sell a lot of it at work I put that in the golf gearbox and the problem had gone it basically lubricates all the gear syncros etc where the gearbox oil can't from cold.

Brilliant stuff bare in mind also LUCAS products are USA yank made so they do what they say on the tin.

Hope that helps

Cheers Rich

I agree on what you are all saying with this gearbox in the Exeo 1st to 2nd feels reluctant and 3rd in mine feels ropey, I will be getting some proper gearbox oil from Febi next week change that see how it goes if that doesn't fix it I'm thinking dual mass maybe at fault.

Failing that I may look at putting the lucas transmission fix in with the new gearbox oil.

Here's another thing to try. If it works then you'll need to give credit to (cupra)jake as I spotted this on his post on another forum. I've tried this and its taken me numerous attempts, but I have ironed out some of the resistance on gear changes (although not the 'massive diffierence' that others with A4s have seen).

Problem is finding someone who can do it for me

Its not that hard to do, having done this several times, it now takes me about 3.5 mins to take out gear cover, insulation, ash tray etc (first time was more like 35 mins).

Hmm ill get the fluid changed first see if that helps as to be honest I don't fancy doing the adjustment I'm no good at all with stuff like that.

Just annoying 1st and 2nd feels terrible in a morning and when I hit 3rd just feels like I've caught something on the way in. Take a hell of a lot of time trying to get it into gear don't rush etc as I don't want to balls the syncro up in the box!
