Hi to everyone,

I really need some advice I have an R reg kiwi green cupra sport GTi 2 litre 16valve and my reverse gear has totally gone.

I've got a replacement gearbox but what i need to know is there any special tools i need to take the old one out and put the new one in. I'm quite new to all of this ive done minor things like oil change, air filter, oil filter, brake pads, spark plugs and wishbones. But this is a big job, unfortunatley I'm not in a position to be able to pay someon to do it so it will be me in the garage.

So all tips and advice would be a godsend.

Thanks

Im getting to the stage of should i just scrap or sell the car

spline fitting for the drive shafts and rest is just basic tools and patience really

Like Ibiza_95 said, M8 is the size you need, you should be able to get spline bits from anywhere that sells car/hand tools, Machine Mart do a set for 29 quid with more than you'll ever need. If you can get a long shaft bit like the ones in the MM set it'll make life easier as there's not much space next to the bolts.

Most essential tool for this job has to be a second person as it's a pain refitting the gearbox and getting everthing lined up, seems to go on at a strange angle. Or get an engine crane & take the whole lot out :)

to get the gearbox off, leaving the engine in you should only need... (dont quote me)
10mm socket
13mm socket
17mm socket
19mm socket
Flat screwdriver
Hammer
M8 Spline tool

Its a fairly easy job to get it off... getting it back on is the ball ache part... deffinitely need a couple of strong people to get it back on...
also its a fair bit of lying on the floor, and in this weather its a bit crappy...

just consider that i paid 60 quid to have a gearbox swapped over on my old 1.4
if its going to take you a day to do it yourself you may aswell just put yourself in for an extra day over time, earn the 60 quid in the warmth, and pay someone else to do the work in the cold....

just a thought

where bouts are you from?
i know a guy in wakefield....
also... give some of your local back street garages a bell and see how much theyll do it for...

as a rough idea i paid 60 for the box and 60 for fitting... also got a clutch i think at about the same kind of price 60 ish
