gearbox strength

I've been wondering just how strong the VAG TDI gearbox is?

I'd put this in the tuning section but I can't post there as a newbie.

Is the TDI box the same as the Petrol equivalent with different gearing? How much torque can be put through before longevity suffers?

I've even wondered if it's the same box as used in the vans / passat W8 or 2.5 TDI motors..... if so it must be rated quite highly

Has anyone suffered from bearing troubles / failure when pushing a lot of torque through the box? I'm just trying to get a feeling for the affects of having more torque than perhaps the car was designed for in the first place (considering a remapped purchase).

High possibility of clutch problems after a remap though. They aren't designed to cope with over 300ft/lbs

Ignore the passat comments. sigh.

I looked in the tuning section and there's no "new thread" although looking in the TDI tuning section there is a "new thread" available. not sure on the best place to post this as the gearbox may not be specific to the Leon only.

so apart from an uprated clutch, there aren't many known problems?

The gearbox is very strong indeed, as said the clutch being the weak point on non-standard cars. On the VW race stuff I think most had boxes built with uprated bearings, but thats about it (and an LSD of course).
