Hi all ive read a few posts on here about changing the oil due to crunching and grinding when changing gears (bearing in mind mine isnt that excessive only every now and then). However Id like to confirm the following :

1. Ive bought RedLine MT90 and would like to know as its (0.946 Litres) would I need to purchase another one? As ive read in the ibiza section they require 2 litres?!?

2. If I decided to change the synco mesh would it the gearbox need to be taken out? Sorry if its a dumb question im a little rusty on gearboxes.

3. How do I change the gearbox oil? Can anyone shed some pointers where the drainage plug is and where the filler plug is?

4. Is there anything else I should know?

cheers

If it's a 6 speed box you have you will need 3 bottles of redline as the box holds just over 2 uk litres which is more then 2 quarts of redline.

Yes you would need to remove the gearbox to replace the syncro.

There is a drain and fill hole on the front of the 6 speed box, there is also a special tool to open these. Easy for a garage to do as you need to have the car level on a ramp to do it.

Neil.

The drain plug is underneath the gearbox you cant miss it. You need a M16 spline drive socket with a hole drilled in it to open them and the check plug is the same on the front of the box opposite your intercooler pipe. use this to fill it up till it comes out and make sure its level. I used standard fluid from seat to change mine and that got rid of the odd noises from the box i just think my level was a bit low.

As i said i think mine was a bit low and thats why you get the crunching gears. i changed it for no reason, just for peace of mind, so change it if you want it wont do any harm. All you really need to do is check the level and top it up and that should get rid of the noises.

Its easy!! u will be done in half an hour!!

TIP: Get some hose pipe about half a meter or so and feed it through the engine bay, this way you can pour the oil down the pipe to fill up the gearbox standing up and its not so messy and a hell of allot easier!!! trust me!!! and make sure you have the special M16 socket to take the drain plugs out!!
