G-force meter

The g-force meter displays a dot in the middle which moves around depending on accelerations forward/backward/left/right. And there are also numerical values. That much is understandable.

But in addition to those, there is a circle around the moving dot that is split into quadrants, and I can't figure out what it represents. Each quadrant is can be in a different radial position to the others. But it seems to be static, i.e. doesn't change dynamically with accelerations. But the radial positions seems to be slightly different each time I get in the car.

Any ideas what these quadrant indications mean?

OK I think I figured it out. Each quadrant of the outer circle keeps track of the maximum g-force so far in that direction (presumably for the journey concerned). So the moving circle will push out the relevant quadrant as it moves in that direction, and the quadrant will stick there until it is pushed further out, i.e. to keep track of the maximum. Like the high water mark on the beach as the tide comes in.
