Fuel Light - Bit Confused!!

Hi Everyone.

I've just bought a 1997 Ibiza 1.9 diesel and i'm just wondering if the fuel light is supposed to come on when the gauge is just slightly under the quarter of a tank mark and then in a matter of miles go right into the red.

I thought it may have been the gauge stuck at first but its done it again this morning.

Do they have a weird shape fuel tank or is that totally normal? lol

Thanks!

Hi

That's normal. The gauge moves very quickly in the last quarter. There's still a bit of fuel left in the tank when the needle hits the bottom mark, i managed to coast downhill for about 50 minutes with the needle claiming the tank was empty.

on the flip side though, fill the tank up and you can drive for 150 odd miles without using a drop of fuel!

Welcome to ibiza ownership - take a look at the stick thread it will explain all these wonderfull things to you ;)

i suppose its not been too bad on fuel. i've got over 200 miles out of 20quid which isnt bad but then again, the td mondeo estate i was driving before did about the same lol

not just yet, only got her at the weekend. Her name is DERVina now though i think lol
I do about 80miles per day motorway driving so thats why its being good on fuel. (my fuel costs may be cheaper than urs here too.)
I'm gonna give her a good clean at the weekend so i'll get some pics then, she's standard at the mo and i think the only thing i'll do to her is lower her slightly and put some nice wheels on.
after all, i've got the Mk1 to be spending mega money on lol

200miles out of 20quid doesnt sound too bad next to my 115 miles to £15 trying my absolute hardest!

Wierd shape tanks these things have, last quater you literally think you have a leak! I reckon the float must be set quite high in the tank.

i only get 30-40mpg outa my 96 1.9D but thats because i cruise at 85 when i get the chance and ive got a Corrado petrol gearbox so i can do 25 in 5th X-) but anyway

Mine does the same mate when i neck the tank or mainly when i can afford to neck the tank i can go 40-50 miles with a completly full tank before the needle quivers and ive been driving around since monday with intermittent low fuel warnings i wait until its constant on for more than 5 miles then add some.....I think that i may start to run on the ribena if fuel goes up to 1.50 in summer

i drove 350 miles from lincoln to glasgow when i picked my 2nd mk2 up, £30 i used all in...

That red line at the "empty tank" means jack sh1t lol, i possibly did another 20 miles with the needle on red...
