Fuel gauge reading empty

Hi guys

Just bought a 2012 Ibiza, 2.0 fr tdi, 3 days ago and am having a little issue already.
When i turn the ignition on the fuel gauge reads correctly, but after driving it will appear as empty, but with no low fuel light on. Any ideas what this could be?

Thanks
Robert

Hello Robert,

this being a potential electrical fault could be anything from a lose connection, to a faulty fuel float level sensor which is possibly part of fuel pump unit inside fuel tank. Plus there's a control unit according to the Haynes manual which might receive fuel level data and pass it on to your LED dash display, basically any of this can cause an issue.

I've got the Haynes manual for the MK5 Ibiza but the only diesel model it covers is the 1.6 TDi, (fuel pump wiring diagram/photo up to May 2015)

I've uploaded some photos above and below of a wiring diagram from my manual, so it might be very similar to your 2.0 TDi
Also one of the wiring colour code chart circled in red.

(first photo above)
Fuel pump is fuse SC53 in the first photo,
which is 15amp this is fuse number 53 in main fuse box under dash.

(3rd photo)
SA3 is the 110amp fuse in the engine bay, I think in the small fuse box attached to the positive battery lead/terminal.
SA3 is the interior fuse for interior control modules, possibly including the fuel pump/sender control module/unit.

Robert if you're losing fuel level signal on your LED dash, then it might be worth cleaning/checking the contacts in the 5 pin multi plug, that's attached to fuel pump.
NOTE! DO NOT REMOVE FUEL PUMP, I'm only saying to check the electronic 5 pin multi plug only.

(4th photo)
The fuel pump electronic multi plug is in the boot, or under the rear seats might be under your carpet, look for a large black round plastic cover, you'll have to unclip lift this up to reveal the top of fuel pump/sender unit. NOTE! ONLY REMOVE THE PLASTIC EXCESS COVER.

(5th photo)
This shows the electronic 5 pin multi plug disconnected, allowing you to see the electrical 5 pin socket also.
Simply look at the 5 pin connectors in the multi plug and socket, and clean or spray some WD40 on to the contacts.
Then reattach the 5 pin multi plug and you'll need to test pins 2 and 4 to test the operation of fuel sender float.

To do this you'll need to have ignition switched OFF, and have a multimeter set to test resistance, the fuel sender should give a reading to your multimeter.

You should see approx 50 ohms in the empty position.

Approx 290 ohms in the full position.

If you bounce up and down on the back of your car or when you're in the boot, you might see the multimeter reading fluctuate as the float arm moves ??

Other then that you could change the multimeter setting from ohms to 20volts DC, and test for earth and power to sender unit float, and see if it loses power with ignition on, or try it with your engine running, and see if power goes after a few minutes as you've mentioned the dash reading goes to zero.

Looking at the (first photo) like I say shows 5 pins for the fuel pump electronic multi plug,

Large Pin 1) blue/white wire = live/power to fuel pump motor.

Small Pin 2) brown/white wire

Small Pin 3) violet/black wire = this might be the low fuel level wire for low fuel warning light.

Small Pin 4) yellow wire

Large Pin 5) brown wire = main earth for fuel pump motor.

Other than that take your car to your local trusted garage.

Hope this helps
Si
