The wheels cant have made the damage as the new FR TDi has 17's on and returns same MPG. Might be a dodgy sensor that happen to have gone at the same time... also never trust the trip computer... could be a error on there..
Id look at spacers tho, as said above 5mm and hubs are the best option for safety if nothing else.
