FR TDI or FR Petrol?

Afternoon All,

I've got a FR TDI but am thinking of swapping for a FR Petrol. I just wanted some people opinions on the Petrol FR. What are the best things about it? Not too bothered about MPG as don't do a lot of mileage. I know the modding potential on the Petrol is a bit better.

The best things about the TDI are:-
The huge wave of torque you get at 2000 RPM when you boot it, overtaking in a flash. Ermmm actually that's pretty much it apart from the good MPG even when you're in a hurry!

Also, is it worth paying the extra few hundred quid in insurance to get the Cupra petrol or is it not that much better than the FR??

Hope I don't start a debate about Diesel v Petrol but just want peoples opinions.
Cheers,
Ross

After having both petrol and derv ibizas i would say the petrol wins all the time, now my tdi was no slouch, but i have so many more smiles on when driving the petrol cupra compared to a derv

Thanks for the response. What are the Petrol models like for overtaking? I'm going to go test drive one soon but just wanted some advise on what to expect.

when running full stage 2 revo turbo back exhaust etc etc, no problems at all, not had mine rr'd but its probably about 240 bhp and 260lbft torque maybe so plenty of overtaking.

boost comes in at about 2300 rpm and then tails off towards 6000 rpm but still has power up to 7k. the boost gauge peaks to about 22psi initally, holding 20psi untill about 4k rpm and then tailing off to standard boost of 9psi at the limiter / redline

Ah wel it's good that you don't need to constantly rag it to get lots of power Like the type-R that I tested the other day! I'll get a test drive booked in!

I know the derv people will be like ZZZZZzzzzzz, but I have always found the 20vt to very torqey for a petrol engine and as I have said before, if you look up the tech specs it's only a little shy of the torque levels of a 1.9 TDI 100

and when they are mapped they have more than a standard pd160 :)

 However im agreeing on a few points, the 20vT are torque monster's compared to alot of performance petrols out there, such a big engine, and decent amount of torque in a small car its going to shift!

260lb.ft isnt far off a remapped PD130 torque figures, and as said, more than a std PD160.

Mines only running 375lb.ft :)

Only way is to test drive it and see how you feel with it.
I was really impressed with the petrol Cupra when I test drove.. But just couldn't justify one for the 30k or so miles a year that I'm doing!

Drive it, see what you think, then make a decision :)
