Hi I recently came up against a Pug GTI 206, anyone know much about this car ie if it's quicker pulling away and picking up speed against an FR Tdi as it must be reasonably light?

TDI should be more than a match for it, infact shouldt have to much of a problem at all, will have you off the line but you should come back on it strong once moving.

its a revy petrol engine

not amazing but probably quicker than a standard leon fr tdi up to a ton

rolling from 70mph though a tdi should chew it up...remapped tdi would blitz it

I used to have a 206 GTI. About 140bhp from a 2 litre petrol and not that quick. OK off the line but you need to be in the right gear to overtake anything that is making an effort. Not fantastic in the handling department either.

the power to weight will be about the same, both about 8 sec to 60, on the road the leon would take it but only if the pug wasnt ready.

By rights the TDI should have nailed it. The torque is far higher and the turbo will move it along quite nicely, and although the pug is a bit smaller and lighter, its not enough to make the Leon struggle against it.
Not sure how Pug can get away with naming a 130ish BHP car a GTI, but they always have been underpowered when matched to any other make (except citreon of course)

what? did you just escape from a zoo?

206s weigh very little, at least a good 200kgs lighter than a leon at a guess

both must be around 110-120bhp per tonne, and being an NA revy petrol engine it'll be a fair bit more responsive!

underpowered when matched to any other make?? ibiza cupra 156bhp? golf gti 150bhp?

believe it or not the 206 GTi was a very good seller and quite a decent drivers car. it wasnt **** hot or anything, and the GTi 180 was a vast improvement, but was only about a second quicker 0-60 and slightly higher top end. yet it was essentially the same engine!

Ibiza and golf GTI's are (as you have mentioned) higher in BHP. The Ibiza won't be much heavier although the golf is by (at a guess) the same as the leon or there won't be much in it.
The figures on paper look good in its favour, but if a leon fr tdi can leave a gti 180 (which they can) then the 136bhp version doesn't hold much hope.
As for power to wieght, they probably are similair but if doesn't have the torque to pull it along, power is not much use.

Thats not what i'm saying, although i do see your point.
The VW GTI's are in a different class to any GTI's Peugeot can build, and i'm merely stating that for the size engine they put in them (pug's) they are underpowered.
EG. Golf GTI Turbo. 1.8 engine, 180bhp. Pug GTI (ok it has no turbo, but its bigger engine) 2.0 and 136bhp or 180bhp but that came out much later.
If VW can squeeze 180bhp from a 1.8, then why can't pug make 2.0ltr cars acheive 200bhp minimum?
I hope you see my point?

standard leon FR TDI could leave a GTi 180.... seriously you been smoking something?

GTi 180 is quicker than a standard mk3 ibiza cupra, are you saying leon tdi fr is quicker than the ibiza cupra? your having a laugh son!

as for vw squeezing 180bhp from a 1.8......itz got da boost yo!
the NA 1.8 20v makes like 115bhp lol

and as i stated...both 206 GTi engines are the same fundamental blocks, the xe10j and je i think they are called?

i know everyone has to stick up for their cars, but some people just box above their weight! and dont forget...the 206 138 GTi is just short of being a decade old

I see what your trying to say but i dont think your saying it right.

Take the fact that the mk4 Golf had a 2.0 NA engine that produced a pathetic amount of power (110bhp or something?!) then they had a 1.8T which produced 150bhp. The 180bhp was for the Anniversary.

The pug GTI engines are NA are they not? So 180bhp isnt that bad.

I agree that GTI letters are used all too often these days though.

Wow, nothing like being patronised....
I never said a STANDARD tdi would beat the gti 180, and to be honest i doubt it could. a Mapped one could, but then when you look at the figures, there is little difference between a mapped tdi and a pug 180, and the standard tdi and pug 136!
I'm aware that the 1.8 has a turbo (i mentioned if you care to read again)
EG. Golf GTI Turbo. 1.8 engine, 180bhp.
Going back to my original post, i have no doubt a TDI 150 (standard or otherwise) could beat a GTI 136. My old Pug 307 hdi was remapped to aprox 140 and that would beat my mates GTI 136 all the time.
Unfortunatly he lives in cyprus now so sold his car, so i can't run out and get a video of us going head to head (with my map removed of course) or i'd gladly do it.

I agree with all the above, but if your going to make the fastest little Hot hatch you can, surely you'd be aiming to beat cars with smaller engines regardless of a 80th birthday etc.
Take the new 407 twin turbo. 2.2 engine with two bloody turbos bolted on and what is its power output.... 170bhp:lol:
Come on, a 2.2 with 2 turbos being slightly higher than a 1.9 but heavier so ultimatly slower (power to weight i belive it was?) is making them a laughing stock.
GTI badges aren't what they used to be in my eyes.

lol if you didnt mean a standard tdi why mention it??

and i did notice you mentioned turbo's but its not a fair comparison, so saying the pug gti is underpowered compared to the 1.8T isnt fair

now if you had mentioned the civic type r 2.0 16v...i'd have had no come back :p

but at the same time you could then say 1.8Ts are underpowered...a vicious circle.

if that's what you believe then fair enough, i'm never gonna change your mind and i dont intend to try. time for bed now

I have to agree i can be biased about my car (who isn't) but that is a poor argument when you consider that the 136bhp GTI may be getting on for 10 years old, but the 205 gti 1.9 (smaller engine!!) made in 1988 (nearly 2 decades old) was......... 130bhp (bloody quick in those days and still not too shabby today) and i expect it weighed less?
so in 10 years they managed to fine tune it to acheive 6 extra ponys?
Pug must be so proud
Sorry mate, but the GTI badge is more about the badge and not the pedigree and its a shame.
I'd choose the 1.9 205 gti over the 206 anyday, but thats another topic ;)

na have to be revved quite a bit however so more responsive...debatable.

according to parkers website, there are two types of gti, the 138bhp and the 180bhp. what one did you race?
