First Seat, first Diesel.

Hi All,

I have just bought my first Diesel car, a 2009 Seat Leon CR FR.
I have to say I am very impressed with the car and the Diesel side of things isnt too bad either.
Its embarrasing to say but I was completely ripped off by a private seller. I knew before purchasing that the exhaust needed replacing, the aircon wasn't working and a low rev flap thing was making the engine light come on and the price reflected that.

What I didnt notice was the suspension on the passenger side of the car was different to the suspension on the drivers side, the passenger rear shock is completely dead and the passenger front is completely different and the spring floats around when driving. Also the clutch slave cylinder is leaking quite badly and there is brake fluid blown about all underneath the car, which makes me think it has been topped up for a while instead of fixed.

I have bought a clutch kit with new dual mass flywheel and slave cylinder and koni adjustables for the rear, I have bought a second hand FR strut and shock for the front. As soon as I can afford it I will get Koni's for the front aswell. I would love to get a stainless exhaust but that is going to have to wait for a few months aswell.

I'm quite annoyed tbh, it needs an mot next week and I am driving to Ireland in 3 weeks for a holiday.

But I really like the car, and once the problems are fixed it will be interesting to see what it can do.

Welcome to the forums. Wow, that's quite a list to get through! You planning on doing the work yourself? It's a shame it sounds like it's been quite neglected as it's a really nice car! How bad's the exhaust looking?

Thanks for the welcome.
Yeah it is a bit of a list lol, I just didnt notice, no idea why? Each side matched front and back which didnt help, I guess the test drive didnt show it up as I was in a strange city, in a built up urban area where I couldnt completely focus on what the car was telling me and I didnt get above 30. I will be doing the majority of the work to the car, however I have enlisted the help of a friend to assist me with the clutch.
He is the VAG specialist in my group of friends (Ha ) and also the better mechanic, many beers are owed him!

The exhaust is dropping bits of heat shielding and rattling, its rusted almost through in places. It will scrape the mot i hope.

I think the car is pretty good as standard to be fair to it. I bought it because of my new job, im doing aprox 500 miles per month and my old scooby was costing me an absolute fortune! and I was still modding it, which is the trouble with having a passion project that is also your daily.
The Leon was chosen because it's a Diesel, is the sport version and has the interior, badges etc.
I know me, and I am going to mess with it, Ive already started lol, but its not a passion car, it does a job and fair play I really like it, but im not going to be chasing figures, swapping interiors, uprating every single component etc, which i would if i bought a lower model.
I'm fitting my old soundsytem into it, a set of koni's and keeping the oe ride height, stainless exhaust, remap and possibly a different set of alloys then job done.
He says :cheeky:

Looks like you have a nice bit of work to get on with from your list.

Let's all gather round, treat ourselves to a melt in mouth Werther's original and ole Jon will tell a tale of his FR days.

Haha yeah I am well aware of the modding bug, and I'm already doing more than I said I would, but its justified, it needs replacing and you may aswell change it once and do a good job whilst your at it! It's immoral to do otherwise. ;)
However the Scooby made me go too far. This will be a sensible car. True story
As for Legojon's story time, I will have a look at his build thread when I have a moment.

I changed the rear shocks today for koni yellows. The easiest job i think i have ever done on a car.
Lowered the passenger side down and there is a 4" gap between the tyre and the wheel arch. [:@]
It looks like there are 6 coils in the spring on the drivers side and there are 7 coils on the passenger side. I havent taken the drivers side wheel off again to count yet, but i do have a photo of the strut once fitted and the spring is in the back ground. So it is an educated guess, plus i got my hand behind the wheel and felt the coils, but couldnt see to confirm. I took the passenger wheel off and checked all my work to make sure i hadnt messed something up, then counted the coils.
Fuming.
Both shocks needed replacing though. They were both completely shot lol, no resistance, fluid leaking down the sides.
It looks like the spring on the drivers side has coloured dots on it, whereas the spring on the passenger side that is too high doesnt.
Something that i did do wrong was tighten the lower strut bolt with the hub at full drop, instead of raise it to normal ride height then tighten.
So I will take both wheels off tomorrow and redo that.
Anyone know where to buy oe springs from, cheap oe, quick delivery?
