Fan / Blower Issue.

Next job for me to tackle is the fan / blower.

When I turn the dial to positions 1, 2 and 3 it is dead. When I turn it to 4 it starts with a bit of a stutter.

It makes a fair bit of noise as it it is blowing quite hard, but next to nothing is coming out of the vents.

Do we think this is a switch / control dial issue?

Is it the fan motor itself?

Or is it something in between such as a resistor or fuse etc?

The car has had a new heater resistor following some water getting in through the pollen filter.

Any help may prevent me crashing due to a steamed up windscreen, so would be a great help and much appreciated. D.

I had a similar issue with mine, it turned out the small copper bit behind the dial was all bent out of shape and broken and was 'just' touching enough on setting 4 to make it running.

I got a new heater control unit from a scrappy, fitted it and all is well.

hi i had this problem last week, the black plastic trim beneath the bonnet that covers the filter has cracked and causes a leak. i took out the filter and put it next to my emersion heater to dry it out put it back in and it all worked fine. just had to stop it leaking so doesnt do it again.

Krishen, you sound sure about this, could you explain to me how the broken heater matrix means that the fan only works on number 4.

Also Cruiser, how do the controls/dials come out? Does the unit clip out or are there concealed screws?

Moink, did your fan stop working or just the heat? Mine has had the same leak as yours and the heat stopped working. This was corrected by changing the resistor which had burnt out because of the water on it. Because my fan works on 4, this leads me to think that it is not a resistor or fuse because power is getting through.

Cheers Folk.

to get the controls out just pull the 3 knobs off then prise the surround away gently (it does take a bit of pressure) then there are 2? I think screws behind there, phillips head. Mine obviously hadnt been moved in 11 years and were a bit tight!

Had to get mine off after the wing mirror adjustment controls fell into the dash :p

my heat still worked just the blower didnt work. once the filter dried out it was fine. pretty lucky that no damage has been caused by the sound of it.

Right, I've had a good look at it today.

By unplugging the switch dial and making the connections manually with a piece of wire I have found that the blower still only works on 4 and is dead on all others.

I think this means the problem is not the switch dial.

Anybody got any ideas where i should go from here?

Does the Haynes or a wiring diagram show what there is between the switch dial and the fan? Are there any resistors or speed sensors or fuses or relays or anything like that?

As always, help much appreciated.
