Hello all,

Car failed MOT yesterday, left front alloy (had for 4 months) had a big dent in, guess I must have hit a pot hole, tyre is ok, no air leaking but the inside of the rim is dented.

Can I get this repaired? The chap said being alloy it may smash if they hit it out!!

Any suggestions?

New alloy is about £125 with tyre.

I guess I hit a pot hole because I cant remember seeing a dent in the wheel when they came.

How bad is it? Is your spare the same size or is it a space saver? Need a pic.

I work for VOSA and make sure MOT testers are using the correct standards. If there not (judgement was wrong when they failed your wheel) then you are entitled to appeal against the decision of the garage. Its cheaper than buying a new wheel.

Let me have a pic and see if you have a case.

My mates just had the same thing but on both nearside wheels. We took the wheels off and used copper mallets to whack it back into place and this device my mate has, essentially like a straight clamp in reverse (can't remember the name of it, sorry).
After re-test it passed.

Not got a pic sorry as its on the inside of alloy have to be under the car to see it. So reshaping might be an option, will look for someone in chesterfield to have a go.

Alloy wheels are quite brittle compared to steels - I'd be worried about stress fractures etc caused by thumping it back into shape

find a big pot hole photo it and put a claim in with council/highways agency..
they have funds set a side for this very thing...damage to cars from pot holes/speed humps etc..
say it was dark and you didn't see the hole...my mate did it and he got a new wheel and tyre out of them...eventually...
they have a responsibility to maintain the roads..
think there is a thread on here about it...

I wouldn't reshape an Alloy wheel. Alloy looses a lot of strength once deformed and putting the deformity "right" just makes the situation even worse. The alloy will have microfractures in it now.

it will be fine if it is not on the driven wheels, so put the 17" on the back axle
