Excess pollution warning light??

On my way home from work the other morning the excess pollution light came on (the orange one with what looks like a picture of an engine, right centre on the display). There was no noticeable change in the drive of the car.

Phoned the garage and booked in to have it checked, and they said I should be alright to drive the car until then, but if any noticeable change, stop driving.

Anyone had this problem, and any ideas what it could be???

The only time mine has come on is when a coil pack went, but you would know if that had happened because the car runs like a tractor. I think VAG COM is the only way to find out (fault code)

A guy I work with has a golf, and his coil pack went. 30 miles an hour all the way home in safe mode!!!

Booked in on Thurs, i`ll just try not to drive it until then just in case.

Sounds like it could be all sorts of things then!!

The temp sensor is interesting - had my revo trial and the guy said mine needed replacing before stage 1 proper. But when I went back, it wasn`t showing as a fault and got the revo.

I guess you need vag-com to reset the ecu, or can you do it without?

As a caveat, I'd suggest getting someone to check the code, but you may be able to get it to go is you detach either pos or neg battery terminal for 10 mins. That will clear it, as it did mine. Just keep an eye on it to make sure it doesnt reocurr or any symptoms if you do it that way.

Mine came on and stayed on since I had a Miltek catback exhaust fitted, although I don't know if it's coincidence. Sometimes it goes off, but then it's back on the next day. I've not noticed any change in performance, but I'd like to get it sorted as it bugs me[:@] .

I'll let you know if I get it sorted. Please do same if you get yours sorted.

Chris, if you want me to scan it on diagnostics - it will normally flag the error, and it's often straight forward to pin point the offending sender unit.

Let me know (email in sig) - can't hurt since it's all free :D

Had this on my old Passat. Vagcom told me it was the temp sender. £20 for a new one at the dealer, fitted it myself (well, technically my brother did it!), topped up the coolant that it dumped taking the old one out, and it was fine ever after.

Probably not going to be a major expense, unless you get the dealer to fix it for you. I'd seriously consider getting a Vagcom on it before it goes near a dealer, unless it's under warranty.

Trouble is being in Jersey, don`t know anyone with vagcom that isn`t a garage.[:@]

Buy a Vagcom cable off Ebay. I got mine from there for about £15. Free software download onto the laptop (if you don't have a laptop do you know someone who does?) and fault diagnosis done.

The £15 I spent on the cable more than paid for itself by not doing one trip to the stealer. I haven't used it on the Toledo yet but should the need arise (when it's out of warranty) it'll prove it's worth once again.

Got my baby back from the stealer. It was the engine coolant temp sensor, and they`ve replaced it. Obviously cost far too much!!!!!!:[:@]

The vagcom cable sounds like a good idea, especially as we`re buying a Skoda Fabia for the missus (I suppose same system being vag) and i`m typing away on a laptop as we speak, so that bit sorted. Where`s the best place to download the software from, to save me a net trawl!!!:D

Guys, thanks to m0rk, my emissions light is now OFF

It turned out to be a temperature sensor, which I've yet to replace, but the light went out after m0rk reset my ECU.

Thanks to you all for your helpful comments.
