Error: Airbag

Had the passenger side panel off of the dash today, while fitting a dash cam - the one with the passenger airbag disabling key slot. As part of that, I disconnected the actual switch to be able to remove the panel. Everything is now back together as normal.

Since then, while starting the car I get an Error: Airbag warning up on the dashboard after I start the car. Any idea how to clear it?

Just ask @Syphon he did the same from memory ;).

Basically pulling the airbag fuse isn't good. Needs resetting via VCDS. Did the same once hunting why the car wouldn't start due dampness but that one was under the bonnet on the Altea. Lesson you learn, don't pull fuses willy nilly if you dont know what use it is. That's equivalent to a fuse pull you did.

If you hit on the airbag fuse it goes into distress mode till you clear it with VCDS. Being a Leon 4 you might have the celebrated SFD feature of VCDS dependent on which module it resides in. Garage cleared mine for free when I did that some years ago. So a trip to the dealer if you haven't got VCDS tools to hand which might not work in anycase. You'd have to try.

The correct way of working on wiring is to disconnect battery. Breaking part of the airbag circuit when live leads to the issue. If the whole lot is disconnected then it doesn't occur. The downside of this is that atleast in the Ateca one touch window lowering and mirrors in needs resetting. Suspect this may carry over onto the Leon 4. Keep a note on the tablet should this occur:

>>
Resetting one-touch opening and closing
The automatic open and close function will
not work if the battery has been temporarily
disconnected. The function can be restored
as follows:
– Close the window as far as it will go by lift-
ing and holding the electric window switch.
– Release the switch and then lift it again for
1 second. This will re-enable the automatic
function.
If you push (or pull) a button to the first
stage, the window will open (or close) until
you release the button. If you push or lift the
button briefly to the second stage, the win-
dow will open (one-touch opening) or close
(one-touch closing) automatically. If you op-
erate the button while the window is opening
or closing, it stops at this position.
<<

Indeed it's in the Leon 4 manual attached. The mirror in on automatic least on a Kessy is also effected. An undocumented feature till the process is completed.

Cheers! The FAQ on that says that it doesn't reset airbag lights but maybe it actually does!

You could take a gamble. The delivery on Obdeleven would be longer I reckon but would probably do more in the long term. You could play innocent with your dealer, but obviously if they tried to charge you a diagnosis fee you could consider a dongle and live with it till it arrived. It's unit 15 of the control unit. That will show red against it in Obdeleven, press clear and it should go away.

I've found the thread ;)

As I said then grief wouldn't happen if the battery had been disconnected although you would have to retrain the one touch windows on a Leon 4. In the thread it's confirmed that VCDS tools fix it. I'm sure it would work on a Leon 4.

It's a common error that people produce when they dont power down the car and unplug the air bag. Basically the monitoring system is still live so if you disconnect power to just the airbag it thinks the airbag system has failed, yes it has, you pulled the power off to it. This then becomes a permanent message untill it's cleared with VCDS tools.... bet Syphon disconnected the dash camera when he changed cars making x 2. Fitting and removal. Once he got the dealer to fix it after fitting the camera, second time he used the device, by deduction. May be you have to disconnect the airbag to fit a camera, I've never taken off that panel or fitted a dash camera :).

Sorry I could have been clearer. Happened when I wired in the camera, the dealer reset it for me. After the thread posted by @Tell when I disconnected the camera to return the car, it happened again, but I had the device myself to reset it this time.

Cheers,

Scott
Cheers for that, I received it this morning. Unfortunately clearing the fault codes does not reset the Airbag warning. I used the recommended Torque (Lite) app though, unless you used something else?

If not, then a trip to the dealer is on the cards.

I'm sure Odbeleven would do it but you do need their dongle. I'm not familiar with the buy a dongle and match it to software market. It comes up on people trying to use the Obdeleven dongle with other apps, you can't.

If you got to reverse the procedure to remove the camera you'd get rumbled as to causing it. ;)
