This weekend Iv have had a problem with the idleing its been dropping from 800 rpm down to as low as 300 rpm and sometimes cutting out when turning (for instance into a car park space) its put my eml light on aswel. Its not all the time as it will idle perfect until it is driven again. Ive scanned it and it says engine too lean, iv taken my air box off and can see the butterfly opening slightly and shutting when it idles eraticly

Its a 1.6 16v by the way any ideas?

Thanks
ashley

i spoke to my mate about this whos a mechanic and he says that if the revs are fluctuating that much then chances are its naffed and he thinks a new throttle body is around £400!! Is this correct??

one can of TB cleaner = £10

one new TB unit £400

I know what one i'd want to try first, even iif it did nothing the cost impact is so low compared to a new TB it's not worth thinking about....

As an aside i use TB Cleaner on my Leon every few months now (have done for about the last 2 years now), first time i used it i could feel the difference right away it cleared that much crud out!!!.

How do mate, i had my throttle body cleaned at the cost of an hours labour, turned out i needed a new MAF as well though, this sorted my problems out and i had the exact same one as you!

Do not worry just yet!

well hopefully its something as easy as that, thats what my mate said was to try using carb cleaner and if that doesnt work then i know what route to go down. Going to get it booked in this week and get it sorted its doing my head in now, also iv noticed like a diesel pinging noise when i rev it and pull off in first and it sounds just like a diesel.

right had it looked at today, had the throttle body cleaned and positioning reset. Then it had a funny moment brought up epc and eml on and gave us a code ofP1553. we then cleared all the codes and it was fine until i went to drive off and gave it revs and turned the steering wheel and brought the same up again with the same code. Cleared it all again and was fine then on the way home i had funny revs again and then lost all throttle response. I then pulled the plug off the TB and pushed it back on and it worked again, the epc light is now off but eml is on and the car is running fine but idling at 1000 rpm.

So il wait until tomorrow to clear the light and see if it comes back on

any1 reading this thread that has any idea wat so ever plz let me know

Before you spend any large amounts of money, I had similar problems with my 1.8 Cupra, Irratic idle and various strange codes including engine running too lean. I know its a different engine but mine turned out to be a split breather hose.

I'd advise similar to the above.

My LC had a doggy idle and quite often almost stalled with the revs dropping off when pulling away from cold. This has gone since fitting new plugs and coil packs. There is the occassional blip in revs but I am overdue a TB clean.

1). Check pipes and connections.
2). Clean the TB (guide on here) - if you don't have VAG-COM it will adjust but the initial idle might be ruff and it will take several miles to adjust fully (VAG-COM is best though).
3). New plugs.
5). Change coil packs - try a mates first if cash is tight and there is no point in spending money on the wrong thing.

bah! I'm having similar problems now and it's quite scary cos I'll be arriving to a junction and braking and the revs drop massively can cause the engine to cut out which in turns stiffens the steering wheel. Went to the garage and got it scanned which revealed a 'MAF engine running to lean' code. I suspected a problem with the maf before and its under warranty bu this wont happen now til monday at the soonest as the guy with the receipts is not back til then.

Tomorrow I'll try the coils and TB to see if these help as I suspect its something more than just the MAF. Also gonna try what you guys have and test as much as I can myself

also to add that these problems seem to have arisen ever since my car hit the butt of a speed-hump quite heavily, do you think this might have upset something?

sorry, not meaning to hijack the thread or anything - but I got a MAF replacement sensor (not with the casing) and when taking out the old one the actual sensor element was missing!!! With the replacement now in the car is running like a dream...amazing how such a small piece can make such a difference. I'm a little concerned about where the missing piece is though
