Engine sometimes act's as if it's being restricted and then won't rev over 3k

Quick Fix

Hi,

I have a W Reg 1.4 Ibiza Vibe, the problem i'm having is that every now and then the engine seems to restrict and won't rev over 3k rpm no matter how much i put my foot down, then turning it off then on again sometimes clears it then after a while it does it again.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks

Sounds like the MAF to me, try unpluging it, if there is no change then thats it.
I has this on the Ibiza when we brought it, I manged to clean it and 20k later its still ok :)

Thanks GTV,

I'll try to locate it, is it somewhere on the Air Box, is that right?

By the way i have no warning lights coming up does that make a difference?

I'll update once i've had a clean around.

Yes its on the pipe coming off the airbox, I too did not have any fault codes logged. good luck and lets hope it sorts it.

I think i found it, it's on the left hand side of the engine bay, and once you remove the top part of the air box, it's on the side of the inlet. When you take it out (undo two screws) it looks like a sensor inside of a cage. Is any of this making sense or have i just cleaned the wrong thing? lol.

I've looked everywhere for this sensor, i'm not sure my car's got one or if it's meant to. When i open my hood i have a big plastic air box with 1.4 MPI on it, and when i look up for parts i'm told it's the akk engine does this have a MAF? and if not what other problems should i look for?

Thanks alot

I got it checked the other day, it come up with Engine RPM sensor, Coolant Temp Sensor and MAP sensor but the guy said the MAP may only be there because of the Engine RPM sensor is broke.

I spoke to SEAT and they could not determine which rpm sensor it is, as it could be one of three and have quoted me for the expensive one which is 64+Vat and two hours labour plus 20% old car discount bringing the total bill to £302.

I think i may sell this one and maybe buy another one.

is there any one local to you ? who has same model car or engine spec ,,you could try swapping over the maf to see if it cures it ,

or a breakers yard will some times let you try a part ,

,if you tell them your problem they will let you mark a part to test it to see if it cures it ,, hth ,im in surrey if you need any further help let me no ,
, my money is on the maf mass air flow meter .,, as you described its the part that has a small sensor and a cage around it ,

ive owned many a car and worked on 90% of them , reving to 3k is a limp home mode its a clasic sign of the air mass flow sensor breaking down , or maf as its known ,, it can also be something as simple as a leaf blocking the air way to the sensor , thus restricting air to it ,,in some extreme cases a dirty air filter will give the same sign , whereabouts are you in uk??

if possible when it is happening - look to see if full throttle is actually opening properly, may need a reset

the 1.4's were nothing but trouble with that damn fly by wire pedal + lamda connectors come to think of it too
