In my experience, it is not the actual EGR valve that is the issue, it will be the port area at the throttle body, where the recycled get fed back into the engine, gets choked with hot oil based gunge.
You need to buy some gaskets and lift the throttle body off with out disconnecting its wiring, and clean out the port where that long bendy pipe goes to - it starts at the EGR valve so probably need to take that end off, plus a support clip halfway along (fixed to thermostat housing) before you can take it off. I have not tried, but maybe if you are careful when lifting the throttle body away, you might get away with just one or two gaskets.
I think I listed all the gaskets needed on a posting on this forum a couple of years ago.
