engine dropped

isnt it just crap when ya get nearly all the parts ya need so your car passes mot then something else breaks

got lambda sensor, cat, power steering pump and was about to pay for me lights when i went out to start the car.

needless to say it wouldnt!!

Starter had went. gave it to the mate who opened it up and cleaned it or whatever and bolted it back on, car started fine, hooray!!.

Drove round the estate, everytime i was acclerating the engine was rocking back and fourth.

Freaked out and stopped car, opened the bonnet and what a f*****g mess!!! Oil everywhere, looked under the car and engine had dropped about 6 inches, maybe more,
oil filter must have hit off ground or something in engine bay and was cracked, oil pissing out of it.

Engine is now sitting about 6 inches from the ground. Head is done in with this car although i love it 2 bits, shes breaking my heart lol, everytime something gets fixed I get another 5 minutes driving (normal driving i might add lol) then something else breaks.

Could any kind person out there take a look at the pics below, there not the best as they where took with the fone, but if you look closly you will see the mount and the broken/bent pipes leading from the engine.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I cant attach pics yet guys sorry, not enough posts, link below if yas wouldnt mind.

Thanks

its crazy looking,

engine used to sit at a slant, now its more or less sitting level,

as far as i can tell the mount is also a bracket for the starter, so when ive put it back on ihavent threaded the bolt through right and its gave way.

just another thing in the list as long as me fecking arm lol

I'm probably stating the obvious but engine mounts? I think and i'm no authority on these things but there should be one on the bulkhead, one at the front and one at the gearbox... Have a search as people have upgraded them and posted pics.... something massive has failed there

i'll assume it's a 2.0 8v AGG ? and the engine is now slanted forwards ??? well straight up instead of leant back

first things first i would check and fix the front engine mount where the gearbox/engine meet as that's what has probably broke/loose/wrong etc, it usually shares bolts/fittings with the starter motor funnily enough so more likely left a bolt out and it's lowered your engine on the remaining bolt

#6 and #10 in the pic

The metal pipe is the water feed from the back of the water pump to the bulkhead around the block feeds the oil cooler and exp tank on the way - fitted same pipe on 2.0 8v and some of the diesels too but F2Stu has an 8v engine heading for scrap - worth a shout ?

the mount looks seriously twisted

the nut you can see in the pic is the nut the starter motor and engine bolts in,

i cant see how it will though now,

gonna jack the engine up into place and see how bent it really is, not clear from the engine sittin as low as it is

if the oil filter has gone then it will be easier to take it off and check the cooler/mount assy is ok too if it's been hit that hard may have cracked that too

you'll need them off too to replace the water pipe

jack the motor up first to see how bad it all is

This is a very similar problem to the one I had. If it is 2.0 AGG then it would be worth having a look at the bracket you were talking about... That was the exact one the gave way in my car. It seems like your engine has dropped with some force if it has punctured the oil filter. The mounting bracket only cost me £5 from the local breaker.

Best of luck!

So its not as rare as i thought then lol

did the bracket you got come out of a gti mate or are they in the standard mk2s as well.

was it much bother fitting the new one once ya got it?

Cheers for the help

Yeah the bracket I got came out of a GTi. I assume the brackets will be different for all engines considering it's bolted onto the actual engine mount itself (I think all the mounts are different).

It was alot easier than I expected... Just a case of jacking the car and the engine up and replacing it. The part only cost me a fiver from the scrappie. Also changed the oil and filter (mine was damaged due to it resting on the subframe when the engine was dropped).

If you have the right tools it should be a pretty easy fix.
Best of luck again!
