EGT Sensor 1 & Ignition Cylinder 2 misfire!

Hi chaps, Been a long time since I posted on here. Bought a new car and been playing with that for a while now. My brother in law drives my old LCR as I couldn't really get round to selling it and the dealer was offering me stupid money for it....

Anyhow, been driving the LCR for about 2 months now and not had a single issue with it until yesterday. On the way to work, the cars Engine management started flashing and the car was judering alot! I knew it was a coil pack straight away as I experienced this once before. Had to limp to the nearest garage which was just behind the office from where I work. The guy done a diagnostic and he confirmed it was a coil pack on cylinder 2.

Left the car there and he gave me a call at lunch to tell me it was finished, picked it up and thought job done...end of. But after work the light came back on again although the car wasn't behaving abnormal. Took it to my mates garage and used the VAG com to diagnose the problem was down to Cylinder 2 misfire and EGT sensor 1. The EGT was a new 1 to me but i thought the garage probably didn't erase the code thats why it kept showing up.

So my mate erased it for me and I went home..woke up the next day to clean my car and found the Engine management light came back again! Went over to my mate and the VAG com read the same errors. I am thinking the garage probably supplied a faulty coil to me (£47!) but the misfire isn't there at all. I will go to GSF Monday and pick up a new coil to see if the error goes away (Will go back to the garage for a refund too).

What about the EGT? is this a common fault? I heard these are hard to get as most people don't stock em in the UK and need to be shipped from Spain. Anyone know how much? Is it a big deal to get it changed straight away?

Anyone experinced this sort of thing before (including the coil pack issue) please talk to me as I need some help on what to do.

Been doing some reading up and I think the EGT sensor issue was triggered by the Coil pack failier. They do warn not to drive the car for long (or at all) when a coil pack fails as you get un-burnt fuel building up in your exhaust system. This greatly increases the temperature in your exhaust to more than 950. I didn't have any choice as I was on the motorway crawling with a splattering engine. I think any longer then my CAT could have been toast.

From my reading, the job of the EGT sensor is to keep eye of the gas temperature coming off the turbo making sure its not running hotter than it should be. If this is exceeded, the sensors job is to trigger the engine to reduce its valve timing.

Now I can see how the coil pack malfunction and me driving the car firing from 3 cylinders could have caused the poor thing to die on me.

No what im not sure about now is if the EGT sensor is dead, then does this mean my valve timing won't be right? or does it mean the engine will perform like normal but I shouldn't expect the safety of the sensor to stop me blowing the turbo up?

I can afford to buy a new sensor but if its not urgent then I would rather wait till I get paid week after next. Just drive the car like a granny if it helps keep the temperature down.

Quick update....

I replaced the coil pack changed by the "dodgy" garage with an original coil pack from GSF.

Looks like a faulty Coil pack, its was a non VAG supplied part made by MAPCO?

Have been driving the car for a few hours. Left the car in the car park at work for a couple of hours, went back to check if the light came back on for the engine management and it hasn't.

I never changed or done anything with the EGT sensor but im a little suprised it hasn't prompted me that there is a problem. Should I worry about the EGT sensor now that the Engine management doesn't tell me of any problems? or would this only be a secondary error which would only show up is something majour goes wrong?

Alright stranger, how was the world outwith Seat?

Dunno TBH, not heard anyone speaking about EGT sensor problems.

All sounds okay now but if its niggling at the back of your mind just get it changed

I never really left the SEAT world to be honest. Was kept more occupied. The LCR was always there but it was like meeting up with an old friend when I started driving it again.

Yeah the EGT sensor won't be picked up by the Engine Management anymore even though all I did was replace the Coil pack. As I said before, its probably one of those things that are a secondary error more than anything. I will probably wait to see if it comes back again otherwise get it replaced at the next service.

Hi mate had exactly the same problem with MAPCO coilpacks on my car. Decided to change all 4 of them when i was servicing even though had no misfire (50K so worth a new set) and suddenly the car started misfiring. Really couldnt work out what was wrong, but had also changed the sparkplugs for Denso Iridium ones and thought that it must have been the issue. Replaced them with the NGK standard ones but still a misfire. Coilpacks were sent back and with the originals back on no problems.

Moral of the story was that when it comes to coilpacks im sticking to genuine ones from now on.!!
Since changing again with new Genuine ones no problems at all.

Not sure what to do about it really as not many folks seem to have had this issue.

My mate said the same thing. I would have thought for £47, the coil pack the garage should have supplied was an original part. They charged me 2 hours labour on top too. **** Turpin wore a mask last time I saw!

At the moment, All my coils are original and I have kept the MAPCO as a spare incase i need replace a broken 1 just to get me home (just hope its not coil 3 or 4:cry:)

I would always stick to VAG specialist too from now on.

As I mentioned before, its main duty on an LCR is to monitor the temperature from exceeding 950 and bring the valve timing down to let the gas's cool. I geuss we can all avoid needing this by not driving the car full belt all the time. It does take alot of enthusiastic driving to get the turbo gas's to this temperature.

I don't notice any performance differences either. Its around £147 inc VAT and p+p. I will probably get it changed on my next service and see if it comes back. If the light don't come on, it shouldn't worry you as it probably isn't a massive issue.

I think the code reads "sensor 1, no signal". I might and see if I can disconnect and connect it back up.

Did you ever get your EGT sensor changed? I believe mine is dead which keeps pulling my timing back. Comes up as EGT failure on VAGCOM too.
