Muddy -- over on Scoobynet there's a bloke with a Passat Sport estate, he reports getting 40 around town and 45 / 46 on a run at 80-odd mph, says he hasn't hit 50mpg yet.

Worth checking all is as it should be, but maybe mid-40s is par for the estates?

Maybe it is, but I'm surprised that on certain routes that are perfect for high mpg (that would EASILY see 60+mpg in the Ibiza) - ie 40-50mph light cruises on level roads I'm still not getting beyond the 45ish mpg mark.
Having got pretty familiar with the same engine in the Ibiza I know what kind of circumstances should give good figures but they're just not happening.

Obviously the Passat is a heavier car, but surely the weight will have the biggest impact during drives that require lots of slowing down & then having to re-accelerate the heavy barge back up to speed. Once the car is moving and maintaining fairly steady speeds on gentle, level-road cruises I wouldn't have thought the weight should have a huge impact.

The first reason for suspecting the EGR system was the very noticeable hiss, and the circumstances under which it occurs. It was only afterwards I started wondering if this could be affecting the economy too. Maybe it even accounts for the extra rapid engine warmup compared to the Ibiza !
