DSG Selecting neutral in traffic jams

With the latest DSG 7 speed gearbox I just dont know how true it is to select neutral when stopped for periods when stopped in traffic, at lights or just general holdups.

Have been told the selection of neutral stops wear and tear from the moving parts of the multiclutch plates
and also has the benefit of not having to hold the brakes and the brake light showing for longer periods than necessary.

On the face of this it would appear to be good practice, But is it a fact . Anything that could make the DSG gearbox more reliable has to be a good thing..

Keep on seeing things on Honest Johns website saying how unreliable the DSG system is,
I dont know truth from fact or fiction.

Any response most welcome..

I've never had a car with DSG or any other form of robotised manual gearbox, but, it seems that the present trend is to move away from these yet another flawed by "useful" design taken on by VW Group and some others in favour of properly sorted out and modernised traditional gearboxes with torque convertors, seems like these newer versions of traditional auto boxes can be made to be just as fuel efficient as DSG is/was.
Like I said I have had no experience of anything other than manual gearboxes and anything that I've found out has been purely by accidental exposure to what is happening via printed media.

We have had three cars with DSG during the last 9 years in our household, both DSG 6 and DSG 7. The latest one is a VW Golf Alltrack -18 1.8 TSI DSG 6 (dq250).

I have practised to select neutral when the wait is long, it feels good doing that, however the system should take care of it automatically.

Regarding reliability we haven’t had any problems so far.

IMHO they are reliable. If we go 10 years back most problems have occurred with the DSG 7 dq200 (dry clutch version) about year 2012 and older (revised version for MQB based cars as Leon MK3), used to smaller engines as 1.4 TSI with torque below 250 nm. We had a Golf Estate 2014 1.4 TSI for over 4 years with dq200 (revised version), no issues, worked great also with a big cargo trolley on the tow bar now and then.

I haven’t had DSG in any Seat but it’s the same as VW.

The latest DSG 7 is dq381 with wet clutch as DSG 6 dq 250. Dq381 is for more powerful engines which goes for dq500 /dg501 to e.g used in diesels VW/Audi with high torque and Audi RS3 5 cylinder.

In waiting traffic jams or at the lights I usually let the engine do it's start/stop thing in D. In crawling jams, I turn start stop off, and let it crawl, or even hold on D, but if I see the light ahead turn red, and all cars stationary, start stop on it is again! Having had a 6 speed (2.0TDI Leon), and 7 speed (1.0TSI Ibiza) and a 6 speed 'old school' Geatronic (1.5T Volvo V40). I preferred the Leon's DSG. Smooth at any revs, and actually when you have the brakes on D (and start stop off), it actually disengages the DSG clutch (at least that's how I felt it). Ibiza DSG, didn't seem to disengage the clutch on D when stopped and engine on, and very stuttery from standing start. Both Ibiza and Volvo's gearboxes has the 'grr grr' sounds when you have it on the brakes and car wants to move in D. More so on the Volvo. Back to the Q on whether I put it on Neutral. I hardly do, except when i'm at the lights and the 2.0TDI is doing a regen, or the Ibiza is too cold to start/stop.

What version of the DSG does the new Ibiza/Arona have? Is it still DQ200 or is it the new DQ381 as mentioned above?

I only ask as I test drove an Ibiza MK6 Xcellence DSG a few months back and the gripes of my current MK5 DSG (DQ200) had disappeared...

Not as jittery, jumpy, stuttery from a standstill. Didn't seem to get as confused and also the delay when pulling away from an island (i.e in second gear) was gone.
