Hi recently my car has started making an annoying droaning noise. It happened before so I changed the rear wheel bearings & cured it, so I stripped off the rear drums to inspect them, and one of the outer bearings had fallen apart. I changed both sides, but the noise is still there. Do you think it coud be the tyres? It seems worse at different speeds & different road surfaces. It's also very hard to pinpoint whether its coming from the front or rear. Any ideas?

As a rough guide, wheel bearings are a constant drone that increases as speed increases (though it might only start above a certain speed) You should also notice the drone get louder under braking if it's the fronts and vice versa, and louder on right hand corners if it's the left hand bearing and vice versa. If it's a wheel bearing noise that should tell you which corner...

Of course it could just be something rubbing on a tyre, which would give similar results! :)

Don't take this the wrong way but are you sure you did everything correctly when fitting the new bearings? I've occasionally missed something really obvious, usually because it's really obvious & you think you'd never forget it! :) Worst being forgetting to tighten front wheel nuts...

I had this on my GTi a couple of weeks ago. After some heavy rain, a deep droning noise happened every time I got above about 50mph.

It sounded like it was coming from the front and it turned out to be the plastic undertray beneath the engine. The front edge had been knocked back away from the front bumper and it had drooped in the middle and bent and was resting against the engine.

Every time I got above about 2,500 rpm it sounded like all four wheel bearings and the water pump and alternator bearings had simultaneously died!

A quick shove from under the front of the car and it's fixed!!!

Just jacked up o/s/f wheel and noticed ALOT of side to side and up and down movement. Got new wheel bearing sitting here ready to fit, so hope that will cure my noise

did you find the cause of the noise? mines got a bearing type noise from the rear but theres no play at all when its jacked up, i was thinking it could have been the fact it has 17"s on it but did the same with the spare on....
