Driving in the snow

Had to drive to and from work in the snow today. Not a good idea with the Revo on! I should have turned it off really but didn't have my SPS 1 with me. The roads hadn't been gritted and I lost control of the car for the 1st time. I have been well impressed with the brakes on the Cupra tdi and have never had them lock up untill today, coming out of a side road onto a dual carriage way! I slid out onto the inside lane with all four wheels locked. Luckily there was nothing passing the turning at the time so I checked I hadn't sh!t me pants and carried on very sheepishly up the carriageway.

I don't really know what happened, it wasn't like I was speeding, I was only in 2nd gear. As soon as I touched the brake pedal that was it! Some scary sh!t.

The worst thing you can do when you're losing grip or in a slide is touch the brakes, ive learnt it a couple of times! :drive1:
It is the natural reaction though

Same happened to me. All four wheels locked up and sliding helplessly, only doing about 3-4 mph!

Did your ABS work?

I remembered a program I saw ages ago about ABS and how to use it. I thought I'd give it a try after trying to stop by 'touching' the brakes. Apparently, you have to stamp quite hard on the brakes for the ABS to cut in, so I did (still doing 3-4mph) and the ABS cut in this time, stopping me a lot quicker and safer.

Quite strange and scary feeling the pedal vibrate like that for the first time.

All ABS does in the snow is make a noise as you glide into car/lamppost/kerb etc.

Stupid is, as stupid does
"so I checked I hadn't sh!t me pants and carried on"

How long did the checking process take? I tend to have a quick look and then a schuffle before I continue. Just to be on the safe side... The whole process can take approximately 15 seconds.

That'll be ice then...

No amount of technology can help you if there's no grip.
Last winter a stretch of rural road to work had some water running across, it subsequently froze, and about a half-mile stretch of road turned into an ice rink.

Totally surreal - there were cars sliding into ditches, cars spiralling round until they hits things, a minibus overturned in front of me, a copper trying to get to someone fell over and slid down the road on his arse - couldn't even stand up. I had come to a stop, and after a few seconds my car just began to slide sideways until it met the verge and stopped.

Luckily no-one was hurt. It was the most bizarre thing I've watched, this scene of slow-motion carnage unfolding in front of me !

I've never been able to lock my wheels, I think the ABS is far too sensitive, I feel it kicking in a lot, even during normal driving, like when you go over a grid or the road surface changes. Was playing in the snow up in Glossop and near the Woodhead one night last week when the Woodhead was closed, and as soon as I touched the brakes the slightest, the ABS would kick in and the car would just carry on rolling, and not slow the slightest. TCS worked very well though, well it did while it was switched on. We still managed to get the cars stuck several times though :D

No, it didn't cut in as I was only pressing the brake lightly as not to lock the wheels, well that was the idea anyway.

It only takes me a few seconds as I just stick my head between my legs and have a good sniff. If I'm still not sure I also have a good schuffle to see if I'm sitting on any lumps!
