Got up early today and had to defrost the car. Noticed that the wing mirrors didn't defrost. Surprised as i thought they were heated?

They are. You have to move the mirror adjustment knob to the heating setting.

Another thing to note (although I can't confirm this yet) but during the handover the salesperson told me that once in this position you also need to switch on the rear windscreen demister too for mirrors to work. Can anybody confirm if this is the right procedure please? Cheers

I have the same switch on the Golf, works as per DC, just point to the heat position, no rear demister required, quite effective it is to.

Only **** thing being you can't have auto heated and dipping mirrors because they both need the knob to be in different positions.

I haven't found that an issue, I've never had cause to use both together. ie: demist mirrors and then reverse.

Or... reverse on the drive at night and then drive off forward in the morning :)

That old you need the rear windscreen heater on has been knocking around for years and it may have been a requirement on mk4 golfs but thats about it, i guess dealers have never bothered to learn anything else

Thanks guys for the clarification, I guess the salesperson maybe got mixed up with he old model or like Graham said hasn't learnt anything new! I never had to to switch on rear Demisters for my heated mirrors to work in my old A3 so was wondering whether it was correct when I was told this :)

Dean, I had exactly that issue when I arrived at work yesterday and reversed into the car park space, my mirrors didn't dip and I thought 'oh great the reverse mirror issue has returned' I then realised that the mirror position was still in heated position, DOH! :D

Do we have auto dipping mirrors too? How do you activate that? I really need to sit down and read the manual!

This is a saga in itself and from what I understand from previous threads here is how to tell whether you have this function from the factory if you have a SE or FR model:
- Cars which were built up to week 22 (w/c 27th May) had this feature but users reported the mirror not returning after lowering.
- Cars built from week 23 (w/c 3rd June) to week 48 (w/c25th Nov) didn't have this feature added at factory
- Cars built from week 49 (w/c 2nd Dec) has this feature reinstated and the feature works correctly. I can confirm this works as I have a week 50 car and all is good.

If the car doesn't have it the feature can be turned on using vcds, but I'm guessing that it could be unreliable still if the car is built before week 49.

To activate them just place the mirror control into L position (if you're in UK) and engage reverse gear and mirror will dip

It was a standard when I ordered it but the folding mirrors weren't which I thought was odd.

Roll on March.

You are talking about the subject header 'Heated Mirrors'?

I didn't think the SE had this? Thought it was just the FR.

Sorry I should have been clearer, sorry for the confusion :)
You'e right that the FR has the folding and dipping mirror as standard but on the SE model the folding door mirrors could be spec'd as an option and the dipping mirrors comes part of that option. So any peeps who spec'd the option in that period would have been affected I guess.

I think GT is referring to the dip function not the heated mirrors, I could be wrong though - not the first time :)

Ah right, I'm easily confused and not for the first time :)

Spot on
