Do smaller wheels fit over the brakes?

Hi all,

I'm interested to hear if anyone has a second set of wheels for track days... I was planning to get hold of a set but was interested to know if I need any particular size (mainly with relation to the size of the front brakes).

Will 15"s fit over the calipers on the front of the mk3 Ibiza Cupra or is it best to stick to 16"s? I thought the 15"s might be a bit cheaper when I have to replace tyres, would be less likely to catch and might give me a little more acceleration - even thought the top end would be reduced.

Cheers,

-Greg

I think there is only certain 15" wheels that fit. 1 being Comp MO's. I think OZ Ultraleggera's fit and only being 4.7kg would be good for track. It's something to do with the depth i believe. E.G. Honda Integra DC2 has 282mm front brakes on 15's.

Not the GTI. I think it's the 1 ltr or 1.4 ltr with the same front brakes as our rears.

Thanks for that, I tried some 15"s from a Golf yesterday - didn't have any problems at all with clearing the current brakes... However the 'et' was a fair bit different so they were outside the arches (they were 7" wide though).

The et marked on my wheels is 38 and the wheels from the Golf were et27, what should I be looking for to get a good fit that won't catch on either the arches or suspension turrets under heavy cornering? Also are low profile tyres the way to go - ie go for 45 profile rather than cheaper 50 profile?
