do I need a new water pump with my cam belt? Update

My cam belt will be due for replacement this Easter (my Exeo's 5th birthday) and I was wondering if I should get the water pump changed at the same time? It's an extra £130 to have the water pump changed at the same time as the cam belt and I'm sure if I asked the dealer if it was necessary they would say it was but is just to get the extra £130 out of me?

Every cars i owned alway have water pump change same time as timing belt so i know it been done but for extra £130 which seem to be a lot for water pump :confused:

The timing belt and water pump kits should come around £130 to £160 then labour cost on top.

My last car was skoda octavia vrs CR170 diesel and my local VAG garage charged me £280 with the kits & fitted.

I always think it is worth doing for peace of mind. Its prolly around a £60 part. You could likely save a reasonable bit by going to an Indy, but as part of the additional cost of using a Seat garage you do get a 5 year warranty.

Change the pump too. Altho i would shop round. Takes an extra 10 mins to change pump and there about 60 retail plus antifreeze.

Yeah change the water pump. Go somewhere else though that price is extortionate.

I'd rather stick with SEAT to get the 5 year guarantee but I'll see if I can do a deal for cam belt, water pump and MOT (I'd imagine there's got to be a free MOT there at least).

SEAT seem expensive for this compared to the rest of the family, I can see on their leaflet it is £399 + £130 for the pump. That's more than I remember it being. However:



Skoda do the same It's fixed deal and are advertising £459

Providing approved parts are used you'll still have the same time/mileage warranty even if not fitted by a main dealer. From memory the independent I use charged around £350 for belt and pump change.
Main reason it's worth changing the pump at the same time as the belt is there's no extra labour if done together, same as if you're fitting a new flywheel you'd generally do the clutch at the same time.
Sod's law says you change just the belt and a week later the pump fails meaning another £150 or so of labour charges to change it.

£529 does seem quite a bit - sure I paid around £429 only a year or so ago (mines a petrol though) - which was around £50 more than an Indy when I looked at the time (and actually cheaper than a couple of Indy's in my area)

You must though get it serviced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts.

The legislation only applies to the part of the warranty offered by the manufacturer, i.e. insurance-backed extended warranties offered by dealers are not covered and may stipulate different conditions.

If you do get the car serviced outside the dealer networkyou must make sure it's done to the maker's recommended schedule and criteria using approved parts. You must also keep records so you can demonstrate to the manufacturer that servicing was undertaken to their requirements.

You should still get warranty work undertaken by the franchised dealer as it is easier for them to deal directly with the manufacturer.

Read about repairs after the warranty expires before deciding to go outside the dealer network for servicing during the warranty.

I would clarify two items, I would check that the indy is actually using actual OEM parts not OEM 'quality' as in my experience aftermarket parts (even if quotes as 'OE' quality) do fail more often that actual OEM ones.

Secondly, the warranty I referred to is not the warranty that comes with a new car but that SEAT were quoting a 5 year warranty on the cambelt/waterpump (and associated damage) if they change it. The Indy's that quoted my stated only 2 year warranty which is usual for fitting OEM parts.

Don't get me wrong - £529 does seem a lot, round my parts near London I was quoted between £375 and £460, so SEAT's £429 with the longer warranty from a garage I used quote a bit over the past five years worked for me.

Just got back from having this done at my "local" SEAT dealers (70 mile round trip) only to find out when I got home that where they've refitted the front bumper (having taken it off to gain access to the engine) there's a noticeable gap between the bodywork and the bumper on one side and both wheel-arch liners have been refitted incorrectly. Not pleased! I'm going to to take it back first thing in the morning and give them a chance to sort it out before I name and shame them ...

No, JCB SEAT Ashford. Took it back first thing on Saturday morning, the woman on the desk started arguing with me - saying that it was only my word against hers that my car wasn't like that when I brought it in (until I pointed out that my car was inspected when I handed it over and was described by the parts manager as being in "show room condition"). Anyway, I've got it booked in for the bumper to be refitted this Thursday, but even then, when I later phoned to confirm my time slot (having rearranged work and home commitments) she felt it necessary to inform me that the technician had said that the clips that hold the wheel arch liner in place were missing when I brought the car in and invited me to come in to "have it out" with the manager. I of course reassured her that I would not be "having it out" with anybody and also that if there were 10mm gaps between the wheel arch liner and the bumper when I first brought my car in then I would have noticed. Not the best customer service I have ever experienced but fingers crossed for a better experience on Thursday.
