Diesel smell inside ibiza cupra

Hi all,

I've had my cupra about a week now and i absolutely love it. But over the last three days i've noticed a very strong smell of diesel inside the car when i start it first thing in the morning. After a couple of minutes the smell goes and it doesnt happen again until the car is started from dead cold the next morning. Any ideas what could cause this?

Cheers,
Chris

there is a normal funny smell out the exhaust on cold starts, on most diesels.
but in cabin??

if it gets too bad try dealer, tell then your concerned cos of a bad deisel smell and ask them to investigate.

I've got a service due in a couple of thousand miles so if it doesnt get any worse i'll get them to have a look when it goes in for that. I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas in the meantime, or if anyone else had experienced this with an ibiza.

I've had loads of diesels over the years and never experienced any in-car smells unless there was a window open.

Is it brand new, or a couple of years old? And do you mean a smell of burnt diesel fumes, or raw diesel fuel?

If it's a couple of years old, has it had the fuel pump recall done on it?

Mine was subject to that recall. Before the job was done, I did get the occasional smell of raw diesel inside - but in my case it was fairly random. After the recall job was done, the problem seems to have gone.

The recall was due to faulty bolts securing the fuel pump, which could cause a fuel leak. This isn't as serious as it sounds because diesel fuel is not such a serious fire hazard as petrol.

It's an 04 plate. The guy i bought it off knew about the fuel pump recall and said that this had been carried out.

I'd say the smell is more like diesely exhaust fumes.

I turned the ventilation fan off in the car this morning when i started it and got no smell. I've been letting the car warm up for a couple of minutes before moving off in the mornings, and the last few days have been windy, so i'm wondering if exhaust fumes have been blown to wherever the ventilation picks up its air from and sucked into the car.
