I had that but not every day just on occasion and always about 5 mins after starting. Took my car to garage recently and they did'nt see anything obvious but did say there was a small 2" breather hose slightly right of the EGR valve that did not have a clip fastening it to some other bit ???. They stuck a jubilee clip on it and i have'nt noticed the smell since, however it is a bit warmer at the mo so not so much diesel is being thrown in early on.....
Seem to remember the pipe had material on the outside if that helps identify it for you..

What kind of diesel smell? burnt id persume as stright fuel isnt that pungent. may be a gasket leak or even hole in the exhaust but i wouldnt worry too much if its on a cold morning as they'll run a fair bit richer.

Tank breather id say then if there is nothing loose/wet under the bonnet. Have a look under the rear seats around the big round sender/pump flap thing. not sure if its un bolts or just lifts out giving acess to pump/sender unit bolts. Never been under there myself.

The 'burnt fuel' smell in mine disappeared after replacing the exhaust (inc downpipe) so im guessing it was the gasket between turbo and downpipe at fault. Smell came back recently but unburnt, turns out i'd got some fuel on my shoes while filling up and got it on the mat. Once the car had run for a while the blowers made the smell less obvious.

Kindly check the plugging of your car to notice where the diesel smell that irritates you in a series of time is.
