Detailing Jaguar with protective coating on paint?

Hi all,

My Dad's birthday was yesterday and I have asked him if he wants his car detailed. He looked very pleased and I will get mine done too, hopefully 2 car discount! Anyway he told me when new the car had a special protective layer of paint/lacquer but he thinks it only last 5 years. The car is a convertible Jaguar XK8 1998.
Basically is it safe/wise or does it even work to detail/paint correct these cars? I don't really want to ask a pro when ringing up as course they will say yes! I have clayed his car for him before if this makes any difference?

Well detailing the car will probably take off most if not all of this protective layer if there is any left in the first place.
Im not quite sure what kind of "layer" it is, wether its a laquer based thing or just a really long lasting waxy stuff.
If it was a waxy thing then the clay would have probably taken it off anyway.

Im pretty certain that detailing the car will work as machine polishers will just cut through whatever is on the top coat. Might be worth telling the compny that it used to have one of those protective coats though...

Is it something along the lines of Supraguard or Diamondbrite? If it is then yes its safe to detail/paint correct the paint on the car. Did your Dad buy the car from new? If so the Supaguard is more than likely to have gone by now and if you are getting a full detail which includes claying the claying will prob remove it.
There is a few topics on Supaguard on DetailingWorld if you have a look.
I am sure someone else will come and correct me if I am talking complete crap again.

I clayed the car myself last Summer been in the garage since but out to play again this week and sailed through it's MOT.
Yes he bought the car from new back in 1998 but has hardly done any mileage but sadly there are some scratches and small dents. I don't think he knows what the surface is called maybe we could dig out some old paperwork but it was done at the factory he has the same on his Merc. I will have a look on DW then thanks Alex thought you may comment!
