If it’s just the outer gaiters then OEM is about £25 each with all the parts needed.
Then about 45mins labour per side

Are you doing it yourself or paying someone? You can get the outer joints for £23 each on carparts4less or the boot kit for £10. I assume a garage will charge about an hour per side so that will be about £100 plus parts.

Those cheap £10 boots are rubbish and won’t last very long. They are like a hard plastic material and crack easily.
OEM is much better quality, more flexible quality rubber

It’s easy enough to do on your drive at home.
I did the inner boots a few months ago, and then just went to my local independent garage to get the tracking done and the hub nut torqued up.

I've never used any boots from carparts4less but the patten ones my local motor factors sell are good quality.

I had a quote for changing the inner CV joint which came to 80 quid inc VAT, I bought another driveshaft (with 2 year warranty) and swapped the lot over including new bolts / hub nut it cost me 60 quid because my brother did it instead as it's easier.

I've still got the OEM shaft / can replace aaccordingl if it breaks so it'll be an easier job than removing / refitting

If the boot is split it will fail the mot and it will allow grit in which will ware the joint. Of the joint is already worn then it won't matter too much if you leave it for awhile.

Not only that.

The grease keeps the joint cool and obviously lubricated .
Once the grease escapes the joint becomes very hot and expands , eventually the joint will snap where the splines from the hub end meet the conical of the joint and from the prolonged excessive heat , you will then loose all drive and be stranded until the AA man has finished his lunch

When the joint snapped this also takes the wheel bearing with it as the hub nut against the joint holds it all together. Then if your really unlucky the driveshaft now flying around out of control damages your abs sensor wiring and brake pipes and makes a right old mess and ££££!

Get them done or your only wish you did sooner

I got a few quotes for mine several months back and they varied between £140 and £280 for the pair of outer CV boots to be replaced.

You could go old school with it....get yourself a bag for life (any one will do, personal prefernce), fill it with grease and elastic band the hell out of it around where the boot was lol

Think im going to get it done in few weeks! I can see metal fillings in the grease that has dripped onto the inside of my wheel! Is that bad news or normal?

That's where you no longer have grease in the joint , the balls in the jont have expanded and are rubbing and wearing the housing away causing metal fillings and won't take long until the joint gives up

Shall I get both outer cv joints replaced? Will just an outer kit be enough or will I need anything else? Also where would be a good place to get one?

Hello mate

If only one has split just replace that one .

I got mine from GSF but don't get the cheap one . But the more expensive KIT better clips in that one and there not too expensive either . Just me you could go to eurocar parts but I don't like the quality of their stuff , the clips didn't fit properly and it was a nightmare .

You get everything you need but I would buy some extra grease as they are tight on the grease and as you know more grease the better !

And your need a massive multi spline socket 12sodded for the hub nut think its 30mm off the top of my head

This will help you but obviously yours is to far gone for a rebuilt and I don't remove the drive shaft

When you doing it ? I have family in henley on Thames so not a million miles away and have all the tools if you wanted a hand

Thanks for the offer spud but ill prob take it to wheels in motion as I just had my steering geometry/ wheel alighnment done there and they said they would redo that for free and only charge on labour fitting the cv joint!
Was thinking about just replacing the whole joint and doing both sides

I would only replace the one that needs doing. That only needs replacing as the boot split and let grit into it. You could get them to check to see if the other boot is starting to crack up a bit if so get that boot replaced.
