Cutting out

I have a R reg Alhambra that has done over 150K . It runs smoothly and sweetly and on a recent diagnostic check at Seat specialists they could find no fault. However I am getting sudden drop in revs especially just after starting up from cold. The revs drop without warning and the car stalls. At first this seemed to occur only in damp or wet weather and the problem seemed to disappear after getting warmed up. But the situation has worsened and can now happen at any time I have to slow down at lights or change gear etc ,and this occurs even when the engine is fully warmed up.
My dealer has been great and wants me to leave the car overnight and have a look at early in the morning but this is hard to arrange as I live over 50 miles away. I love the car - it is far and away the best motor I have had in 25 years so would appreciate any advice.

You mention it happened in wet at first, I would check the ignition coil first, look very closely for cracks, white marks or scoring. Those sort of things start of in the wet then gradually make it worse.

i too am having this problem. but have changed the coil (after driving through a puddle, conking out and having to call the AA) and it still does it so my next move is replacing the maff sensor but running low on funds so may take a couple of week but i will let you know the out come and vice versa if you find a remedy please.

dogg:confused:

I think MAF sensors usually give bad running all the time. Mind you I would check the air filter make sure its clean, then check the air intake ducting for holes or cracks.

Id look at where the water may have gone to affect it, id look at the wires on and around the starter motor, thats right near the ground so could get spray, so id check those connections. Also i think the speed sensor is around there, so id check those connections also.

Also distributor cap for cracks if you have one.

And maybe run the car at night and look in engine bay check for arcing along HT leads etc.

I had a problem that was much like this and finally traced it to the electrical plug on the MAF sensor. The plug was a fairly loose fit and as the voltages are very small the loose plug was all that was required to give bad readings. Re fitted plug and put large cable tie around plug and Maf sensor ensuring that plug was a firm fit and have not had any problems since.
The plug on my 20VT model is situated in such a place that when you remove the tray under wiper linkage to get to the pollen filter it is possible to dislodge plug.

Hope this is of some assistance.

It could be a number of faults happening at the same time. However the above sounds like a fuel pump/tank issue. Ie petrol surging to one side of the tank. Does this happen when you have a full tank?

Also, do you have trouble starting?

Maybe check the battery connections and battery itself, are they secure? Any movement may cause above issues.

Just see if you can narrow it down to when it tends to do it. Like you mentioned cornering, that helps. Also if its when the engine is cold or hot, or both, or wet etc.

see how you get on with above
