yeah but its worth it ! If power and P11d are your thing then its BMW all the way :( or a Mini Cooper D The Focus is cheap too and the new Astra is due out at the end of the year or you could try the FR Tdi

BMW is a no ( prestige apparently even it was my last car ) And it's a no to the mini too ( not enough doors ). Astra ? Nope.

I'm a little naffed off with the soot trail Steve, hence looking at petrol

I went on lots of test drives a few months back also choosing a company vehicle.

On paper, the 1 series wins. Low lease cost (low depreciation and running costs) and so the 120 M-Sport works out cheaper than the Leon. However at test drive, I could not believe how low rent it feels and also accommodation is woeful.

I then tried the A3 Sportback - sales person was an arse, plus the passenger footwell legroom was very poor.

Golf GT TDi was next - very good. I hated the Mk5 Golf as the handling was awful IMO - far too heavy and the suspension and damper set-up emphasised the weight - it actually felt heavier than my previous Lexus! Anyway, the Mk6 is set-up much better, is better on economy, the interior is good - all nice.

Leon FR next - not as good on economy, not as good on residual cost or servicing cost - so works out more costly than the Golf. But a hoot to drive.

If a private purchase - I would have gone for the Golf as I already have a weekend fun car, so my 'daily driver' doesn't need to be 'special' and the Golf would do commuter duty well. But since someone else is picking up the servicing bills and depreciation - I have gone for the Leon FR.

The Leon and Golf were both significantly better than the A3 and BMW though. IMO.
 
it took a day for a brochure to arrive for me but then the Skoda rep had just been in so i'm sure they had something to do with it :) You could consider the octavia the VRs in yellow is quite nice. The CUpra is nice although the extra £1500 on tax does seem a little steep, I didn't think P11d wise and CO2 it was that bad ? it is quite low considering the output and I would have thiught your GOlf must have quite a high list price, i'm sure mine was near on 23k new and i thought you had a few more extras on yours.... if you are looking for a dealer i'd reccomend RM Fisher in Lancaster nr Blackpool, I had very good service from them.

Co2 pm the cupra is 190g - the GT is 145g as it's a twincharged 1.4 so that's a 9% difference on BIK. Thanks for the heads up on the dealer but I'm in Surrey so it's a bit too far

Worth driving the diesel as well you know. I realise what you say about soot trail, but are you really looking backwards when you floor it anyway? The new PD engine is very flexible and for the next 2 years the P11d is cheaper on the FR170 than the Golf GT140 (yr3 the FR is more).... IIRC it is £109/mth tax on the FR vs £112/mth on the Golf assuming 40% tax and no options - this obviously will be more once you add extras.

Will have a look at the FR now, thanks. It would seem a good alternative - the same engine in the Folf cost £000s more !

had a quick look at Revo's website...there's a bit about the 170 CR engine in the Skoda and they say as standard it made 193 bhp / 276 lb/ft - that pretty much bang on what my mk5 makes with its map...

Hmmm.....
 
on your mileage i wouldn't have thought the DPF would have been much of a problem, however I believe the facelift FR has the common rail engine and is a little bit cleaner. YOu can remap them and have DPF offf ( see custom code) and get somewhere near 220bhp, I wouldn't consider the FR petrol, for the extra i'd pay for the Cupra.

thanks Steve. I've just read the 6 pages in the CC section + seen steveyg's thread about his..he seems pleased with the DPF-OFF. Not sure about ( a ) not having the car for 2 days and ( b ) £800 as its a company car after all...

Why do you say no to the petrol FR ? 211 bhp out of the box so 260+ remapped...or am i missing something vital ?
 
I don't think there is much difference between the emissions and the P11d value, if you go for the facelift model it has a different engine to the early cars, its the same as the Mk6 Golf GTI, around 210 out of the box. Its not as tuneable at the moment, hence VAG still using the older engine in the Cupra R and the Scirroco R which kicks out 260bhp. If I get chance i'll have a look at the P11'd values this afternoon as i've got to work some out for the Focus's

I had a quick look this morning - there's about £70 per month difference ( or £50-ish over the mk5 ), but that does include tax on private fuel too

Its then a clear choice of paying a little extra for a car you really want. Personally, having had a Cupra, I would struggle to move down a model to the FR or whatever, but it would be easier going to a different marque and living with a "Superior" but (much) "Slower" car.

more workings out...

I do ( on average over the last 4.5 years ) 1375 miles per month...If i got 30mpg from the cupra, that'd be abt 46 gallons or 209 litres x £1.06 / litre = £221.54 per month in fuel.

The tax i'd get charged as a company car on fuel would be £147 per month

Last year, I did 3011 business miles x £0.40 ppm = £100 per month if i got paid mileage...
In previous years, i've averaged 5685 business miles x £0.40 = £190 per month

So, worst case is £221.54 - £147 = £74.54 per month as the cost of fuel, best case = £ 31.54 per month.

The tax on the car itself is £178 + £74.54 = total cost £ 252.54 per month or if I returned to previous years mileage, then £ 209.54 per month

I'm currently paying £ 226 per month in tax for the Golf..If I got paid mileage, I could get the cupra and ( on average ) be £4 worse off per month.....

Am i talking myself into this ?

haha ! Need to test drive one first - my local dealer not good at returning calls or sending brochures it seems....

Then I need to convince the Directors...
 
Seat at Letchworth have a few K1's so getting a demo from there might not be a problem, I think you will have to travel to see one. If your ever around Peterborough i'd be happy to show you around mine. I had to travel 200 miles to get mine and i'd never even driven a Cupra, i just wanted one. Its seriously is good fun. Don't forget to take bluefin off the golf and get the unit reset and put it on the Cupra, mine cost £200 to do. If your desperate for a brochure PM/email me your address and i'll send you mine or i'll ask our lease company to send you one.
