Just wondering what peoples experiences are when it comes to insurance and modifications?

I’m getting my Cobra cat-back exhaust fitted tomorrow and then Revo Stage 1 remap done once fitted. Whats the deal with declaring this do you just ring up insurance company and they up your premium?

Hey mate,

Yes is the short answer!

I've got a Cupra 280 with forge motorsport carbon intake and boost pipe, 12mm spacers all round and a Remus back box delete with quad tips, i reckon all in my premium went up about £300/£400 a year! I think it depends on the mods though as when i rang up they asked about the mods and then had to work it out for me. It went from stock to modified insurance.

I'm with Elephant insurance though so could be different for you depending on insurer.

Thanks for the reply, i’m currently at ~£500 with GoSkippy at age 25. Gonna give them a ring now and i will post the results!

So GoSkippy flat out refused to insure with modifications so i did a quick comparethemarket search and the cheapest i could find was £1500 for the year.....

Gave Adrian Flux a call and they have managed to get me a yearly premium with an added £194 per year and they also include unlimited modifcations as long as i don’t increase the BHP any further than stage 1!

Yep that sounds about right! most of the insurers are dodgy about mods! specially bhp increases.

When i comparethemarket.com i was getting £1500 too. ended up staying with Elephant who i was already with, tweaked my policy a bit and managed to get it down to under £1200, which for a near on 300bhp modified Cupra, living in London i didn't think was too bad! thats with nationwide recovery and motor legal protection too.

Yeah i really can’t argue with £700 for the year considering my age, i live in scotland too which probably helps, didn’t realise London boosts the premium?

Thats a great price!!! nice one. I'm getting ripped off! hahaha, to be fair though some of that is London and probably the area i live in as when i searched for insurance with no modification i was still looking at £900-£1000.

any of the mainstream insurers will walk away/refuse or quote silly money.
As you have found, go with the brokers that work with forums/modified vehicles such as Adrian flux, greenlight and so on. its not as bad as you think.
Also consider if you want 'like for like cover' - this means they repair the car as it is, not the OEM in case of accident or theft..
Many do not realise, that when you declare mods, they are not insured, the increased risk you now pose is insured, but the parts are not. any crash and the car is repaired to standard spec. Those expensive alloys you declared? - you will get OEM fitted in case of a claim. Of fitted cupra R bumpers and declared these? again you will get the OEM bumpers fitted in case of a crash/claim.
Unless you have like for like cover where you specify the mods and they will repair like for like.

I had a number of modifications on my previous GTI - springs, exhaust, intake, wheels etc. and my insurer, Admiral, were very good with it.
All of the modifications, bar the wheels, were free to add to the policy, the wheels cost me an admin charge of around £30, although it made no sense as the others were free, I couldn't complain at that.

However, in the event of a claim, they would only cover the value of the OEM parts that have been changed, unlike Greenlight for example that would cover the cost of aftermarket part, I believe.

The only modification they wouldn't cover and would cancel my policy over was an intercooler.... but hybrid turbos are fine...

Would definitely recommend Adrian Flux if anyone is looking to switch insurer to facilitate any future modifications they have in mind.

Insurance is a bit of a lottery, how these pricing actuaries work out costs for mods is beyond me. Bit easier to understand if you live in a high crime area, have speeding points and are 21 etc etc.

I called Admiral requesting a quote for a stage 1 remap and they quoted me an additional £18 to the end of the policy, pro-rata that up and it's £27 for the full year. I actually laughed because I thought it would be hundreds! For some reason Admiral are really cheap for me, £212 a year for a near 300bhp car, I'll take that!

check with your insurance before you fit anything! chances are they will refuse.

I have been an Adrian Flux customer for years, have 2 modified cars insured with them and a bike.

Hi,
Glad we could help out with your insurance and thanks for the positive comments.
Regards,
Dan.

Hi Dan
I'm already a flux customer, and just wondering what the approx additional cost would be to add a Milltek Downpipe and Hi flo cat, Revo stage 2 to my already modified Cupra ST?
Many thanks

Hi Huffcap,

Thanks for the message and if you'd like to message me your full name / postcode I can investigate. I'm hoping that as you are already insured through us on a modified car there won't be any further premium increase.

Once I have your details we can advise.

Thanks.

Dan

Completely off topic sorry but your mods sound great, would it be possible for you to take a picture of the exhaust tips from the back? Was looking into getting quad exhaust at some point but mine is on finance so can’t really

Hi Dan
Thanks for your reply. In the interim l thought I'd try at get you at Flux, but someone there said they could deal with my query. Apparently as i am already covered for these mods there will be no additional cost ( as you suspected). All i have to do is let them know when it is done.
Anyway, many thanks for your prompt response
cheers

I am with Adrian Flux since I went stage 3 and very supprised how reasonable the cost's were.

I was with ESURE before and they gave me a good price on stage 1 and some body mods but as soon as you start doing lots of changes they say thanks but no thanks.

It was exactly the same for me @Blowski, I got a stage 1 on my Octavia vRS TDI, all in all a 50BHP increase and it cost me £26 extra! Admiral like most insurers have a sliding scale where BHP increase is concerned becuase I asked how they calculate it and it's based on percentage increase against the standard figure so, 0-10%, 11-26% and so on, so the more you increase compared to standard the more you pay, i.e. better if your car is already powerful as 20% of 300 gives a decent hike and the 11-26% bracket is pretty common for stage 1 hence the cheap cost we have paid :)
