How are you switching it on ?

First you need to switch it on with the slide switch on top of the left stalk.

This will not switch the light in the dash on.

Then when you are at your required speed you need to press the set button ( lower button on the end of the stalk )

Then you should see the light in the dash and the car should hold speed

Ive been switching it on exactly like that

Check the simple things first like -
Are your brake lights stuck on ? - would indicate a faulty brake switch and prevent cruise control being used.

Then unfortunately and to quote m0rk - Diagnostics scan required I'm afraid

something else to throw into this...
Are your feet completely away from the clutch and brake pedals. the micro switches are so sensitive for the clutch that even touching the pedal with a feather switches off the cruise. Only found this out because the wife could never get the cruise to work whilst driving my Ibiza. When I looked, her foot was just about touching the clutch, moved her foot away and hey presto cruise worked fine.;)
