Could it be the clutch?

Hi All,

Was driving along on the motorway today, everything seemed to be running fine. I was doing 3,000rpm in 6th and needed to overtake. Put my foot down (90% throttle) started to accelerate ok but then got a vibration and the engine light started to flash. When I slowed down the everything seemed fine again. Tried 5th and the same thing happened so I can off the motorway and tried the other gears. It seems if I use less than 80% throttle it's ok regardless of the gear but but anything more than 80% it's ok until the boost and power build up. Also at one point I noticed the revs rising normally but the car speed rising slowly.

Could this be the start of the clutch going??

Had a new throttle body last month.

Leon Cupra 20VT (2004) AUQ engine.

Cheers,

Peter.

A wearing clutch you will notice the revs rise quickly but no increase in speed. On my slipping kit car i get no vibrations. You would notice slip more in higher gears when the car is under most load (accelerating from low revs at full throttle). What is it like to speed up quickly in 2nd?

In second it will accelerate normally until I get to about 3,500rpm then the judder and reduced acceleration will happen.

Hi,

I tried the 30 in 4th, and initially when flat to the floor seems ok untill I hit 2,500rpm and then I get the judder and flashing engine light.

Couldn't really notice a visual difference between the tacho and speedo though. Could the juddering be the clutch slipping and grabbing like uneven brakes?

Hmmmm

Thats when it comes on boost?

Is the clutch actually slipping? does the rev counter shoot up but the speed only slowly increases?

I'd get it code read could be something simple like a MAF and the vibrations could just be stuttering.

Its a Coil pack without a doubt- same symptoms been covered many times if you do a search ;) Easy fix.....

Its failing but not failed completely. Get 4 new ones as they all tend to start playing up when one does - about £22 each from GSF or ECp.........

that's a thought, I did have to replace one a couple of months ago.
Only had then fully go which is why I didn't think of it.

doesnt sound like the clutch mate as it happens in every gear ie if it was clutch slip unless major i dont think you would notice the slip in 2nd till its at the very end of its life which is quite a gradually worsening process that you mainly notice in the higher gears first

99% sure it will be a coil pack. Could be plugs if your getting close to needing a 40k

Hi All,

I still have this problem and it's doing my head in now.
Plugged in the ol' VAGCOM and a misfire on 3 showed up.
Replaced all the coil packs and all the plugs and the problem continued.
Then during some normal commuter running I noticed the temp gauge started randomly dropping and rising during the whole journey.
Did a bit of searching and found it could be a problem with the dual temp sensor, so I bought one and I still have all the same symptoms.

Any ideas????

Could it be an electrical/wiring problem? Seems strange it would only cause a misfire on cyclinder 3 though.

Jezzag60 - I like the idea of 40k but I'm now on 107k :)

Thanks,

Peter.

Possible wiring worth checking continuity across to ecu with a multimetre but after this youve tried what you can and id have to say get it into a specialist before the trial and error method of replacing parts costs you a lot more.
