Cooling, fan, temp guage and more problems

hi having a few problems but it might take me a while to explain

firstly we are talking about a seat toledo 2002 1.9 tdi 110bhp

i was getting drips under the car also it was using water and me and the mechanic attributed to a blocked radiator worn water pump or headgasket damage.

So I first went for the radiator taking it out to be tested found it was well worn and replaced it.
Found there was no leaks but the fans would not start unless the ac was on so i thought this maybe the fan controller on the radiator so i replaced it with one i got at a car dismantlers got the same problem again. no fans.

i noticed that the raidiator was cold so i replaced the thermostat. i did the hot water test with this and found the thermostat did not move so was stuck. Did not change anything the fans did not switch on.

so i told the mechanic to replace the water pump and put a timing belt kit on at the same time. He replaced to with alot of bother the waterpump was well seized on the car. he found not alot wrong with it except one of the fins broke. So he did the headgasket test when he was at it and this come back negative.

Found the car was driving perfect for 15 minutes then start to overheat according to the temp gauge. but this was through rough driving and if i took my foot off the gas the car returned to 90 degrees.

i did the fan check bridging the connections across and the high and low speed fans seem to be going on.

another thing ive noticed sometimes after driving the fan would go on full speed when i turn off the car this is the only time i have noticed the car put the fan on without the ac on.

both the upper and lower water pump are warm so the water is circulating but i have found them to be quite hard to press.

today i was reading about the vag diagnostic climate control will display a temp readout so i tried that put it on code 51c.

what i found was that this temp does not match the temp gauge seeming to be alot lower. the climate control readout going up to 90 degrees alot slower. also when the car starts to overheat according to the temp gauge this climate control readout displays 90 and does not go above this.

please help i dont want to really get the head done without sounding out all other ideas it would just break my heart if i changed the head gasket and it didnt fix the problem.

Also i must add the car is driving the best plenty of power it just does not seem to me to be headgasket damage

No good still the same boiling the water in the bottle but not showing it as boiling in the temp hand or the climate control read out.

lots of pressure on the water pipes though.

any ideas

Weird I seem to have a similar problem, same age and model too!

I am fine driving slowly round town, but if i do a motorway run i find i need to refil my expansion tank.

Underside of car has the brown coolant staining from the overflowing tank and I also have a small drip from the radiator that I am going to look at tomorrow!

I don think mine is the head as I have done 20K with this issue and its still running!

Come on guys, can anyone help?

Now i have found that the fan only runs when i have stopped the car or when i turn on the ac. whould it be a electrical problem after all

My fan was working, always runs if AC on, I did a good run came home left engine on with AC off. The fan did kick in.

I think the problem may have been related to waterpump, as I back flushed the system and it made things worse! Car then started to over heat at high speed.

In the end, I gave up and am now a pround owner of a new EXEO.

Good luck with your quest and I hope you find a solution, I managed over 21,000 miles with this fault!

First of all, which coolant did you used? Have you checked the Fuses on top of the Battery?

Your symptoms were quite similar when I had my A/C fuse blown out. Fans not turning on at all, and on WOT-ing.. it would overheat. Mind you, after I replaced the fuse, the temp goes fine now. Might check that?

I've changed my water pump and thermostat already, and I still need to flush the system as the expansion bottle looks quite rusty and I need to clean the whole water system off and bled it, replacing it with a better coolant.

hi i run the car without a thermostat and got it to bring the fan on when the car overheated once i drove like this for two weeks with no problems but now i have put the thermostat in again(new one) its doing the same thing again.

it has to be air locking but i cant get the air out of the cooling system at all.

just using water at the moment as the coolant is quite expensive especially when it overheats out of the header tank when it boils.

Have you actually replaced/checked the waterpump to see if it's working? Open up the coolant cap when cold. Start engine, look into the container.. You SHOULD see water dripping on the reservoir from the top tap.
