hi having a few problems but it might take me a while to explain
firstly we are talking about a seat toledo 2002 1.9 tdi 110bhp
i was getting drips under the car also it was using water and me and the mechanic attributed to a blocked radiator worn water pump or headgasket damage.
So I first went for the radiator taking it out to be tested found it was well worn and replaced it.
Found there was no leaks but the fans would not start unless the ac was on so i thought this maybe the fan controller on the radiator so i replaced it with one i got at a car dismantlers got the same problem again. no fans.
i noticed that the raidiator was cold so i replaced the thermostat. i did the hot water test with this and found the thermostat did not move so was stuck. Did not change anything the fans did not switch on.
so i told the mechanic to replace the water pump and put a timing belt kit on at the same time. He replaced to with alot of bother the waterpump was well seized on the car. he found not alot wrong with it except one of the fins broke. So he did the headgasket test when he was at it and this come back negative.
Found the car was driving perfect for 15 minutes then start to overheat according to the temp gauge. but this was through rough driving and if i took my foot off the gas the car returned to 90 degrees.
i did the fan check bridging the connections across and the high and low speed fans seem to be going on.
another thing ive noticed sometimes after driving the fan would go on full speed when i turn off the car this is the only time i have noticed the car put the fan on without the ac on.
both the upper and lower water pump are warm so the water is circulating but i have found them to be quite hard to press.
today i was reading about the vag diagnostic climate control will display a temp readout so i tried that put it on code 51c.
what i found was that this temp does not match the temp gauge seeming to be alot lower. the climate control readout going up to 90 degrees alot slower. also when the car starts to overheat according to the temp gauge this climate control readout displays 90 and does not go above this.
please help i dont want to really get the head done without sounding out all other ideas it would just break my heart if i changed the head gasket and it didnt fix the problem.
Also i must add the car is driving the best plenty of power it just does not seem to me to be headgasket damage
