Anyone else have this on their Leon R, or any other for that matter.

Anytime its cold in the mornings, sub 5°C and colder.

Always turn on the ignition, wait a moment, then turn to fire it up, and as it fires up, the diesel sound of the starter motor, and then a short rattle from the engine, which sounds a bit dodgy

However i can turn it off, and re-start and it doesn't do it then, could it be that the followers, are just not filled with oil?? Or just the starter motor, a bit chilly having a senior moment.

Just wondering if anyone else has the same thing in the morning?

As long as I know its not about to lunch itself or something :D Good to know its seems to be a trait of the engine. Never noticed it on the Cupra, just seems to be the AMK and in your case the BAM engines

Oil is upto level, and is fairly fresh, only done about 2000 miles since its last full oil & filter change, so i know thats good.

Ive always known about the diesel powered starter motor, just this crazy raspy, metal against metal rattle sound on cold mornings, its a bit un-nerving.

Back from the dead
the older PB and KR engines were the same in winter. The oil thickens up a bit and takes a few more seconds to get round the block.

When they were older (60k miles +) the tappets used to make a fairly unpleasant din for about 10-15 seconds. Oil pumps have never been up to much in VAG engines.

My LC's done it for for the last 2 winters so I've not been too bothered about it. Sounds a bit like the car is clearing this throat in the mornings

Me too!

I'm sure I read on here a while ago ( from an Audi techie if I remember right?) that it was the cam belt slipping on the tensioner wheel? Must admit I was a little sceptical of this but maybe I just misunderstood his explanation!

Funny tho, it never happened on an Ibiza R I had so cant understand why low oil pressure at top end is the culprit (unless this car had different oil pump)???

At least its good to know i'm not the only one!

not the starter motor running on is it?mine does it when cold, split second of raspy squeal even when you've let go of the key, supposed to get it fixed last year, then it got warmer and disapeared.i'll probably fix it the day after the starter lunches itself
