Are the coil packs numbered 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 as you look at the engine bay, so coil 4 is under the TIP?

Or is number 4 to the left, so number 1 is under the TIP.

Sorry if it seems a daft question!!

I have a missfire on cyclinder 1.

And i have tried searching before i get moaned at...

Next question...

I'm 99% sure a coil went on my car last night, it had all the tell tail signs - juddering & sounds like a suburu blitz exhaust blah blah.

I had a spare in my boot, i changed each coil untill the car sounded better. After changing coil 3 the car sounded normal again. Although it was 0215 on a pitch black country road so i couldn't really have a good look at each coil.

However, thinking i'd fixed it, i drove 0.5mile and the same happened again. So i'm not sure if another coil went, or if i never remedied the first coil.

Vagcom has gave me the following codes:

16795 - secondary air injection

16684 - random misfire (see below)

16685 - cylinder 1, misfire

17766 - cylinder 2, ignition circuit Open Circuit

I've just had a mess with the coil packs, and found the following:

When coil 1 is removed (other 3 coils still in place) - car runs but is juddering

When coil 2 is removed (other 3 coils still in place) - car runs but it juddering

When coil 3 is removed (other 3 coils still in place) - car don't start at all

When coil 4 is removed (other 3 coils still in place) - car don't start at all

So am i right in thinking coil 1 & 2 both need replacing?

I can't beleive such a simple commom fault can be so much hassle to fix!

Any info is much appreciated!!

Based on that description it might be that coil 1 needs replacing and coil 2 needs re-seating correctly? IIRC Ignition open circuit is sometimes reported with non-genuine coilpacks as well. I would imagine the car doesn't start at all when 3 or 4 is removed because the car is unable to run on 2 cylinders.

I'd check coil 2 is in correctly or even swap it over for coil 3/4 to see if the fault clears and whack a whole new one in coil 1 and go from there.
