I've had this also accelerating/decellerating, turned out the front engine mount was snapped clean in half.

Not when pulling off though. But on another occasion I had a clunk when pulling away and it turned out to be the lower arm. The bolt had worked loose slightly and needed nipping up a bit

Well the plan is im going to change the dogbone mount (again) after xmas.. and possibly the gearbox-side mount too (common failing point apparenlty)

after that ill have to start looking at transmission components :(

bigger wheels are normally the culprit for driveshaft and transmission problems as they are under alot more stress!

I'm glad i used the 'search' and found this thread. My mk3 cupra has just developed this clunking sound. First off i thought I had a flat tyre. I had to stop the car on my way home and check, but all four were ok. The clunking seems to happen when i take my foot off the gas from the passenger side front. It seems consistent to what has been described before.

Update!

You won't believe it, but my wheel nuts were all loose on my front left tyre!! Checked them out today to try and eliminate the possibilities and found all four needed tightening. I'd only brought it in to Northway tyres last week for two new tyres and tracking. Seems they didn't do a good job in doing them up. Peed off but thanking g-d it wasn't anything more serious.

Funnily enough, thats what my bro said, go down there and kick up a stink. Thing is now its been rectified, its my word against theirs, but i think i might write a letter to their head office, suggesting they remind the mechanics to tighten wheel bolts!

if it was personally mwe as i said i would really kick up a fuss but thats me :) but in doing this they have to say something to the technicians that worked on your car and this can be embarrasing as its such a simple mistake and will make sure they never do it again and might give you a friendly gesture next time you use them
