any reason for a charge cooler rather than a FMIC?

I think its always been thought that the FMIC is better for the Ibizas? I'm sure some knowledgeable person will come along soon lol

i have always favored charge coolers from my experiance have always found better overall due to the fact of shorter pipe runs and not having to build so much pressure lag is a lot less and you can super cold water to lower charge temps too next to nothing lol.

I've been humming & arrring about weather to use a chargecooler or FMIC on mine, i really fancy a C/C but for the track a FMIC would probably be better (a few reasons) 1/4 mile would suit it very well as would road use.
Depends what you want it for use wise but i'd like to use both tbh!

been there done that.
engine-p-side2.jpg

previously on my ibiza, now on mrsb lupo 1.8t

Pro's are compact size, water has x4 specific heat capacity that air,
cons, are pumps are required, water resvoir, pre-rad.

if you add peltier coolers you can chill to subambient temps which fmic cannot do.

Ive seen some logs against a FMIC on the site somewhere and the FMIC came out an easy winner

no offense bu am i guessing these were logs from a forge fmic or a pro compared to a universal charge cooler.

becuase to be honest i think against a lesser fmic the charge cooler would be a better comprimise.

MrsB Lupo can run sub ambient temps when running peltiers... show me an FMIC which can do this without spray

What exactly are peltiers???? did a quick google and i read something about thermo electric device  bit over my head tbh.

On the chargecooler front, the only problem with them is long periods of boost can heat up the water and its slower to dissipate it so the pre-rad is very important. i don't see a problem on the road but a 20min track session could cause problems (again depending on the set up)
a start would be to run 50/50 mix of methonol/distilled water & some water wetter,a larger tank will only delay heat soak & add weight.
Large FMIC is simpler & lighter but it depends again what you want out of it.

a forge or pro interecoole will not be lighter

charge cooler water resevior could be your existing washer bottle, so no additional weight as its already there. I doubt weight is the differentiator as charge cooler is more compact pipework wise vs FMIC + pipe runs and hoses to get there and back.

FMIC is simpler without question.
Prerad size needs to be big as... on charge cooler, as although water/air intercoolers are x4 more specific heat capacity on absorbtion, they're also x4 slower to give it up... and heat exchange rate is proportional to the differential temps involved.. eg FMIC has very high differential from charge temp to ambient to heat exchanges well, and pre-rad has a lesser differential from its water to air. (without cheating with peltiers like I mentioned where the water stored is 3'C on a 25'C day, so some charge cooler can run lower temps than fmic which are ambient temp limited (without spraying them)

I hav the chargercooler kit fitted to my ibiza and its seems to be doing a great job in perfomance.
