Changing Headunit

Hello,
I am trying to find a way to get a music into my car
I a not too fond of CDs because you can't re-use them and my car doesn't like re-writeable CDs and won't play them
I have tried using an MP3 player in the aux but I can see myself leaving it left on all the time and going through a tonne of batteries

In my old car I used a JVC headunit with a USB in-put and this worked well, it was easy to swap songs over on it as it was a usb stick and it never needed batteries etc. (Y)

If I put this headunit in my new car will the steering wheel controls still work ?
Could I get it to work with an adaptor or anything?
Do SEAT still do the usb port in the glovebox - I read it somewhere in the manual, dunno much about it though

or what would you suggest?

thanks! :)

to get the steering wheel controls working you need an adaptor similar to this one

You would need to create your own USB adaptor for the glovebox - a simple usb extension lead would do it.

I think I got it :)

will this work:

using this ^ JVC steering wheel compatible headunit

[img]http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/oscthumb.php?src=/images/CTSST001.jpg&w=350&h=198.36795252226&f=jpg&q=95&hash=ecd08d4783028e57403560b819a905e2[/im

using one of these adaptors in the back of the headunit

and then also I need one of these "patch" leads

is this right? and it should just be a full plug and play system without splicing and stuff?

I assume that your picture of the BMW quadlock connector is an illustration of the stalk controller (£30 lead for the jvc stalk adapter to plug into)?

Pretty much, you have pulled out the HU to check it is Quadlock & not ISO connectors. Otherwise that could be an amateur mistake! haha.

what adaptor would work with this headunit?
I'm a bit confused between quadlock and iso :/

Pull out the current stereo.

If you have this connector then its Iso:

If it has this type of connector its Quadlock:

Any clearer?

Hi mate,
Right choose what unit you want, you can use DIN or Double DIN.
Wiring wise, ive yet to see a mk4 at work on quadlock, so its likely youll be on ISO. This means for the steering controls you will need a CTSST002 (just ordered mine off ebay as most includes the adapters for the head unit) which will enable an easy swap. Very quick and easy install (about 10 mins).
I pretty much have that exact setup with the KD-R901. Very good unit and fits in with the dash very well. I need to install my steering controls soon so i can make a tut for you if you like (on my 06 plate FR)??

Yeah im using the dynamic sounds one, works really well! But honestly get it off ebay as they are £20 posted with a patch! Yeah I'll send u the link when i can get on ebay (at college atm!!).
As for the tut, when i get home I'll take some pics and put the tutorial up, hopefully it will stop snowing by then! The only other thing that you will need is a antenna adapter (£5 from halfords). Is is a very easy fit though, just plug and play really. General list:
1. Remove old radio using removal keys
2. Take out the tray underneath
3. Plug in radio adapters (inc steering controls)
4. place cag and and secure down (dw pics are coming!)
5. insert antenna adapter
6. Pull wires through the cage, plug them all into the radio
7. Push radio in and attach trim

I picked my radio up yesterday so thought I would have a go at putting it together, I bought an adaptor from halfords since I thought I would need one but connected it all and get no sound from speakers :(
it must be working because it managed to get radio signal and also had the name of the song when I put a USB in
I'm guessing this adaptor is used instead of the one from halfords?
I expected it to work without the steering wheel controls

I found it a problem to hide all the wires somewhere :S
since the JVC one has an adaptor from it, going to the halfords one, going to the standard ones it got a bit crowded lol, I managed to get the stereo in place but the tray underneath was a couple of cm too far out lol

anyway, I'll order the adaptor + patch off eBay
and wait for the pics to see what you've done lol
thanks for the help
