changing con rods

does anyone know is it hard to change the con rods and what other associates parts needed to do the job ...

Depends on how your doing it?? engine out and strip or sump off, head off??
i'd think about checking bores, replacing rings, big end bearings etc etc... not the smallest of jobs and if you have the head off you'll obv need head set (gaskets bolts etc) and a cam belt kit (better change the water pump at the same time)

Someone who's done this might have a full list for you which will help!

1stly head needs removing, then the sump to undo the big end shells, you also need quite a wealth of knowledge, piston ring compressor, torque wrech, know how to properly seal the sump. Possibly a quick hone and new rings. If your not a competant home mechanic then leave it to someone who knows their stuff, also need new headgasket and headbolts, aswell as exhaust gaskets etc.

Crank is in the way so to remove crank, gearbox has to come off, flywheel, timing belt, end pully, end plates/main seals, oil pump, sump and even then its a heavy ******* to put back in and hold while you bolt main bearing caps in. Easiest way is to remove the head, its not that hard on these.

agreed... unless your changing the clutch/fly then leave the engine in and do it through the head/sump off. day's work for a good tech or a weekend for the less experienced.

Also make sure you have everything before starting, gaskets, pistonrings, oil, tools (tensinor tool, head bolt socket) good range of extensions, e14 for turbo mounting bolts, timing belt and tensioners etc and good jack and axel stands, torque wrench maybe reducers etc also need a pistonring compressor.

Never known anyone to go to all that hassle, easier to remove the head, that also means you can send it off to be chemically cleaned to get rid of all old oil and coked up shiz so its like new, also gives you a chance to change all gaksets (head set) timing belt, water pump etc, and give the cylinders a proper hone, have you ever removed a crankshaft? you will need end plates (seals) and its even worth changing the main baring shells. Personally id just remove the head in the car, sump off, 14 mm big end bolts off and push them through the top, as for installing them never tried throug the bottom with a ring compressor.
