im not sure if this has came up before, but i drive the 1.4 sport and i have a cat back exhaust. the other week i decided i wanted to get the cat removed to try and free up some power and also to get it to pop and bang a bit louder.

but apparently my car has two cats, one near the manifold and the second in the uniform place, ive herd of this in a quicker car i.e new scooby's but not in a 1.4.

but im wondering if this is true or if the guy was jus fobbing me off..

cheers

Yup it will have two cats, one is a "mani-cat" - ie its part of the manifold so that it gets hots gases quickly, and the second one further back - it would have been required to get the later EU certificate for that engine. I'd also think that you will find that its a metallic monilyth so you can't just whack it to bits with a screw driver. Lots of Jap imports have ceramic mani-cats and that is really bad as they tend to shred and small bits of ceramic gets sent back into cylinder 4 through the EGR system - which causes excessive cylinder wear and a hunger for oil - so it seems, a friend at work bought an exdemo MR2 and immediately smashed the core out because of this problem - but the question must be why are the Japs still using ceramic cat cores?
