Ive had a few issues with my 16v gti over the weekend
It all started when i was parked up in a layby on the phone my car was ticking over then after about 5mins the car just spultered then the engine died :( It then would not start for love na money. I was really confused by this time. After about 30 mins of checking the leads etc n tryin to start it it sunddenly just fired up drove down the road parked up and turned her off. 5mins later she struggled to start again but when give it abit of gas she fired up. Then when i was on my way home she sunddenly started backpopping and juddering so i dropped it down a gear to keep the revs up.
The rev counter was going wild bounce up and down basically in its own little world then she conked out and i had to get towed home. I had a look the next day checked the leads, plugs ignition coil still wouldnt start then i disconnected the sensor that plugs into the front of the engine give it a quick clean plugged it back in and it was fine. Untill sunday nite when it kept strugglin to start then on the way home i broke don again. ive tryed cleaning the sensor i cleaned before and still ont start.

Dose anybody have a clue what this could be?
Im about to order a new distributor see if that works

I'd like to be the first to suggest a nice can of carb cleaner and a toothbrush down the TB :D

You could try making sure all the relays are seated correctly, i had similar problems with my fuel pump relay

is the car cranking over when turning key, does it sound like theres any compression?

Take distributor cap off and have someone turn ignition, if sparks in distributor then its not that, could be rotor arm or dodgy ignition coil.

the sensor on the front of the engine, did you take it out the engine block and clean it? or just disconnect it?

coil pack mate!
loads have had it (including myself)
it wouldn't start, then it suddenly started, went like 10miles on normal roads, stopped it, wouldn't start again! easy fix, not too expensive neither!

Well yesterday i spent £200 on my car and its still not running me an a mate managed to change many parts, Distributor,Coil pack, Fuel filter, Leads, Plugs etc etc etc an still didnt start in the end we located the crank sensor and got it off to find it had melted and the copper wires where on show and rubbing on the engine. So i orderd a crank sensor at £50 this morning at it has just arrived so i will fit it 2nite
