Car Insurence Quotes, Some supprising findings

Went on line today to compare.com & confused.com to get some insurance quotes, as it's due at the end of the month.

And i discovered some very interesting findings and ones which i'm sure others will also find of interest.

Having got a quote using only the registraton number, where the site automatically logs into DVLA to find out what car you have I got a quote from Marks & Spencer Insurence of £100 cheaper, than if i put in the car make and model manually.

Why is this you may be thinking... Well it seems that by useing just the registration number, DVLA have my car as a Leon SE 20Vt and by putting in the make and model manually obviously I chose the right model a Leon 20VT Cupra, i got this quote of just over £225.00 Fully Comp with protected bonus, which is half what it was to insure last year, as an upgrade from my last car.

Excellent, :D :D guess where i'm reinsuring this year, and it's not with either of the sites recommended insurers as one didn't want to quote me, and the other still hasn't been bothered to phone back after telling me yesterday they would phone back that afternoon, so they've lost my business straight away.

It's a funny old game...

Its interesting what effects quotes and what doesn't. I used confused.com and saved myself £300 odd by adding my mum as a named driver????

She has a clean licence and loads of no claims....Definitely worth a try! (Use your own Mum though!!)

I paid £550 fully comp for my LC 53 plate. And I was quoted the same price to ensure and LCR!!

Indeed it is, My mum doesn't drive so thats a bit of a no go, but the difference was quite simply staggering, from the cheapest of £225 to the dearest Hastings direct at almost £900 going through gocompare.com.

All these online insurances are transacted via Statement of Fact, ie Good faith,

After accepting the quotation, you will received a completed proposal form which forms the basis of the contract. That form will indeed say that the Car is a Leon SE, and in theory you have accepted this. So they can say you have knowingly Insured a car on the incorrect model and paid a lower premium.

You would not have a leg to stand on in the event of any problems.

Yeah i can see your point, but what i was getting at was, when i input the car's reg# it came back with Leon SE 20Vt, which is obviusly checked through DVLA swansea, via a link from the insurance companies database.

So if i went ahead and took out the insurance uder those terms, i would be covered, as, as far as i'm aware ;) they should have the right model listed on their database for my registration number...

I doubt they would see it that way - ignorance is not an excuse in the eyes of the law.

When I picked up my LCR there was some confusion with the registration - some insurers had the car down as a Mazda 5 - cracking cheap insurance, but the wrong car entirely.

When I used the confused .com I was actually given stupid quotes. You can't tailor some of your requirements on that whereas you can on some individual companies' sites (i.e. company no claims rather than full personal no claims).

On confused.com I was classed at 0 years NCB, whereas on individual ones such as Direct Line I had 9 years NCB(because of company no claims).

i try confused.com every year and the quotes they come back with are never anywhere near what i can get direct from directline. i have mates that are developers for both confused.com and gocompare.com, i might ask them if they can write in some *dodgy* prices for me. :d

Opps stumbled on this late... but I had the same when I got my LC.

As my LC is an dutch import (right hand drive though and NOT badged as a cupra) and my understanding is that the 'Cupra' brand is specific to the UK. So the garage registered it as a Seat Leon S (I would have thought a Leon 20VT Sport)... but gave me £300 cheaper insurance when I tried to get quotes.

Turns out if you go into detail it lists it as a Leon S 1.8 20V (nonturbo). As lard says, insurance will be more than happy to insure your car for something it isnt but be prepared for them to laugh you off when you try and make a claim.

My opinion is pay the extra and have the piece of mind! ... even if insurance is a big con!

insurance is horrible but neccessary. i would be gutted if i was hit by an uninsured driver so i wouldnt want to impose that on anyone else.

on the other hand....i've paid out about £3000 on insurance in the last 4 years and it is disgusting to think that that is essentially money for nothing.

You only ever see the value of insurance if you're involved in an accident. Even something that might seem a small incident at the time, could run up a bill of a few thousand. All it takes is a couple of body panels, a wheel or two and some suspension and pipe work components and, when combined with the labour and paint charges, you have a nasty looking bill on your hand.

Same as any form of insurance or warranty... you pay for it hoping never to use it, but are damn grateful for it when you need it. So don't risk that by trying to save a few pennies because, when you do need it, you'll be screwed because you lied.

Yeah, but on the other hand, whats with the 'estimated value' crap though!

If you put £7000 they will only ever give you book price (in my case, £5500). I would rather pay the premium knowing I would get £7000 back (less excess).

If you get house insurance you say I want to cover £50K worth of posessions... if the house goes up you get £50K... not some random figure that balances the books.

They play on the fact its a legal requirement I think... bitch over... maybe I shoulda sat with the girls at lunchtime and got it out my system then :)

You can get guaranteed value policies, whereby you pay a small premium to fix the value of your car upfront. This is worthwhile if you've spent a fortune on a new paint job, or refurbishing parts.

But otherwise I agree, the estimated value thing is a joke. If you enter a value that's too low, in the hope of your premium price dropping, they will get upset that you tried to con them out of money. BUT... if you enter a price that's too high, you'll only get book value back. It is possible to enter a value a little higher and use that as weight in your arguments when trying to agree a settlement figure, as they agreed to take on the policy based on that figure, but it really does count for sod all.

I tried a speculative quote from my insurer (Churchill) for a Cupra 20vt and got £330 TPFT, £620 FC. Mailed Greenlight for a quote on the same car and the sent me back a quote for £370 FC.

Interestingly, if the dump valve went and I fitted a Forge or similar, Churchill would charge an extra £150 excess, and the TPFT quote would go up to £500...
