Car experiencing sluggish performance

Hi all,

A little advice is required from you guys and gals with superior Seat knowledge.....

I have a 2002 Mk 2 Seat Toledo Tdi (110) and in recent weeks when accelerating I have noticed that my Tolly is sluggish and almost muted at higher revs. Its seems that I have lost a bit of grunt and before I go for my MOT I'd like to get it resolved. Has anyone got any idea's?

Anyone heard of this before?

Cheers in advance.

Another thread listed possibilities of EGR Valve needing cleaning/replacing or the Turbo needing clearing out and the vanes unseized.

Its booked in with the stealership to have a quick diagnostic on Friday to ascertain what the problem actually is. I hope its a cheap easily rectified problem but I'll be printing out both threads to point them in teh right direction to save my pennies in labour charges. Im not the most technically gifted of mechanics myself.

a small chance of EGR, and even smaller chance of the vanes as you would see it going into limp mode when you booted it if so.

When i had a dodgy maf the stealers were useless, couldnt diagnose it until the 3rd time. they just need to log requested vs actual MAF and compare to diagnose a faulty MAF.

But your symptoms match a dieing maf perfectly.

And is the changing of a dodgy MAF a job simple enough for someone with enthusiasm and a little time? or should I really leave it upto a professional? How much do MAF's sell for and where can I pick one up?

its a doddle to change. its the first sensor directly after the airbox, follow the pipe out of the airbaox back, its right there, right next to the airbox. either get just the sensor then you will need some security torx bits to undo the screws and pull out and replace. Or do the whole thing in the small plastic tube whereby you would just need to release the clips holding it to the pipes.

Something you could try is cleaning it with some isopropyl alcohol, electronics cleaner. Take it out then spray liberally with it, or soak in it and allow to dry then put back together and see if your performance comes back, if it does then you know its dying.

They arent cheap, about £75 for an exchange unit at dealers, get a decent one not a cheapy from ebay i would say.

Well thanks for all the advice. I'd like to say that the reccomendation and diagnosis offered was correct but following the diagnosis at Kings Seat Portsmouth my cars issue has been diagnosed as a faulty turbo.

I have been given a description of the issue and it reads:-
"Fault with Turbo Valve. Checked Turbo, found waste gate not opening fully. Requires turbo strip and decoke or new turbo"

They told me that they'd charge 6 hours labour + VAT (£450 + VAT) to strip and decoke the Turbo but that might still not fix it. Should the problem persist they'd need to replace the turbo which would be £300 + VAT for new parts and god knows how much labour. So with a few weeks to go before Christmas I dont think I'll be having a turbo in my Tolly.

My questions are........how difficult is it to remove and decoke a turbo myself and would someone with limited experience mechanically be able to do it? Secondly...should this fail does anyone know of a company local to Portsmouth that will provide either reconditioned Seat Toledo Turbo's or a spare at a reasonable cost?

I'd like to do as much of this myself as its close to Christmas and I cant really afford to part with potentially £750+ VAT for a cleanup and new turbo should that fail.

Anyone able to help or reccommend good garages in and around Portsmouth or spares local to me it'd be appreciated.

How does one strip and clean a Seat Toledo Mk 2 1.9 TDi Turbo?

Failing that can anyone advise me of the genuine Seat Part number for a 2002 Seat Toledo 1.9 TDi Turbo Charger Unit?

Any diagrams or online guides would be helpful.

Apparently the offending part # is 712968-1 made by Garrett. I've just been offered one new (no reconditioned ones available) for £494.00 + VAT (roughly £580) excluding labour (£75 per hour + VAT = £88.13). That'll be a nice Christmas present won't it?

Guess it'll be the breakers and hope that the same dont happen again eh?

Any suggestions folks?
