Can't rev the car when I start it up

Alright chaps?

I posted a couple of days ago about my faulty boost pipe, which i've now replaced with a new one (and the problem is fixed). I was also getting this problem: when i would start the car up after the it's been left for a few hours (or overnight), and tried revving it, it woouldn't rev. The car almost shakes a little, like it's trying to find its rhythm.

The rev metre stays just below 1000 revs, and the needle moves ever so slightly when i try to rev it.

anyway, after about a minute or two, it starts revving all normal again and the car drives normal!!

the mechanic said it might be an electrical fault..

any ideas please????

I don't think diesels have a throttle body.

Any other suggestions? Could it be something stuck in the exhaust system?

I put it on the VAG-COM and it came back with no fault codes...

Any ideas????

Interesting that you mentioned that. A couple of days ago, the fuel filter was leaking fuel and was covered with it. Turned out to be a faulty fuel filter which I had replaced today. Do you think it could be this?

Is the fuel pump located under the back seat?

Would that have come up on the VAG-COM? Because when I ran it, it came back with no fault codes.

yes behind drivers seat going towards the middle of rear seat

mine does this wen first start up ,, can hold foot flat to floor and still wont rev,, mines only seconds tho


i have turned my idle up on mine which helps a little

again no fault codes from vag com

are u using a genuine lead ???

Two fuel pumps in the PD engine, an electric lift pump in the tank to move the fuel through the filter to the engine and a high-pressure pump on the end of the camshaft. Leaks or airlocks in the fuel pipes could be causing fuel starvation - but I'm guessing.

Once again, for the benefit of everybody (and Mr. Kite - tadaaa) diesels have no throttle. None at all. Full charge of air in at every stroke. So no throttle body.

its often the asv that people confuse for a throttle body

try measuring the pedal position sensors using vcds at idle on start up to see if the sensors are reading.

Could it be one, or even a couple of coilpacks? OP said engine could not find it's rhythm at idle?

Or, like MJ said, measure the pedal outputs on vagcom.

think the throttle is sticking somewhere personally. mates cupra r was doing this. gave the throttlebody a wee manual push few times, then reset with vagcom and car was ok again.

i know this is a diesel so not too sure exactly how the throttle situation works but would start there. ;-)

Controlled by the amount of fuel injected by the ecu.

it could be a fuel temp sensor issue.

Thanks for all your replies chaps. The weird thing is, it's stopped doing it now. It's been revving up fine on startup for the past day and a half for some reason.

Maybe it's an intermittent problem?

mine still does it at first start , a delay in throttle response
